FC Bayern Munich was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after beating Villarreal 1-1 (0-0).

The Munich team lost the first leg in Villarreal 0-1 (0-1).

"Bayern's success is defined a lot by the Champions League, so the semi-finals are the minimum goal," said Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann before the game.

For this he changed his team in terms of personnel and tactics compared to the first leg.

Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sané replaced Alphonso Davies and Serge Gnabry in the starting eleven, which positioned themselves in a three-man chain on the defensive.

The guests, who were massed with their two compact chains of four, left no room for the Munich team in the center.

The Bavarians tried it mainly on the outside positions.

Kingsley Coman, deployed on the left this time, kept looking for one-on-one situations.

His counterpart Leroy Sané was staged with many diagonal balls.

The problem: The hosts' game, which was extremely shifted to the sides, was not crowned with the appropriate crosses.

Lots of flanks, little danger of scoring

A lot of balls rushed towards the six-yard box, but whether it was flat, half-up or high - Unai Emery's players had no problem clearing them.

Only Jamal Musiala caused danger with a header in the 29th minute after a cross from Leon Goretzka.

When things got too fast for the guests, they took every opportunity to speed up the game again.

A delayed throw-in here, a longer treatment break there – Bayern looked a little unnerved after 45 minutes.

However, they came out of the dressing room fresher and more determined.

Musiala was separated from the ball in the penalty area 30 seconds after the restart, and shortly afterwards Dayot Upamecano shot over the guest goal from close range after assisting Sané (50').

The pressure was now increasing by the minute.

Villarreal lost the ball in the build-up game, Bayern switched quickly and Lewandowski finished just outside the penalty area and scored the 1-0 with the help of the right post (52nd).

His 13th goal in the current competition.

FC Bayern was now a permanent guest in the last third of the attack, Villarreal could hardly break free.

Thomas Müller missed the 2-0 goal in the 71st minute – his header after a Sané cross went just wide of the goal to the right.

A moment of shock shortly before the end: first-leg goalscorer Arnaut Danjuma shot just wide to the left (82').

When everything looked like extra time, Samu Chukwueze, who had just come on as a substitute, scored (88th).

Villarreal FC meets the winner of the match Liverpool FC vs. Benfica Lisbon in the semi-finals.

The round of the last four will be held on 26./27.

April and 3./4.
