The main task of the German Ice Hockey Federation is organizing and supervising professional ice hockey operations.

Füssen in Germany - The German Ice Hockey Federation, DEB for short, is the umbrella organization responsible for ice hockey and the associated ice hockey clubs in Germany.

Until its founding in 1963, ice hockey was one of the many sports overseen by the German Ice Sports Association.

On June 16, 1963, however, the DEB was founded.

At that time there were seven district sports associations as well as the clubs of the federal, upper and group leagues that took the founding of their own association into their own hands.

At the time the association was founded, Günther Sabetzki (85, † 2000) chaired the still young organization.

The DEB was founded in Krefeld;

the official seat is in Füssen, with the office in Munich.

The German Ice Hockey Federation has a total of 20,124 members.

The association looks after 90 clubs.

16 state associations belong to the DEB - these are all German state associations with the exception of Brandenburg: This federal state has its own ice hockey association.

The DEB mascot has been the character "Urmel aus dem Eis" from the well-known Augsburger Puppenkiste since 2006.

These are the tasks of the German Ice Hockey Federation DEB

The German Ice Hockey Federation DEB primarily has the important task of organizing, managing and supervising the game operations of the ice hockey league and the international games of the ice hockey national team.

Initially, the latter was the West German national team;

After reunification, the DEB was responsible for looking after the all-German team.

Since it was founded, the German Ice Hockey Federation has hosted several world championships, for example in 1975, 1983 and 2001. Several venues in the Federal Republic served as venues for the international games.

DEB members include:

  • the clubs of the DEL and the DEL2,

  • all clubs that belong to the game operations of the Oberliga, the Frauenbundesliga or the DNL and

  • the 16 state ice sports associations (LEV) of the Federal Republic.

The state associations are responsible for organizing and supervising the regional game operations below the DEL2, for example the regional league or the youth and senior leagues.

The supreme body of the DEB is the General Assembly.

The DEL clubs hold a third of the votes, as do the state ice sports and state ice hockey associations.

Coaches, officials and successes of the German Ice Hockey Federation DEB

The German Ice Hockey Federation DEB has already had numerous international successes in the past when it came to the German national team.

Already under the name Deutscher Eissportverband, the German team was able to take home the silver medal at international competitions in 1910, 1911 and 1914.

In 1930 and 1934 the team even won the European Championships.

The German team under coach Toni Söderholm was also hoping for a good performance in the run-up to the 2022 Ice Hockey World Championships in Finland.

The coaching staff also included assistant coaches Tim Regan, assistant coaches Cory Murphy and Ilpo Kauhanen in preparation for the 2022 World Cup.

Ever since the association was founded, the executive committee of the German Ice Hockey Federation has consisted of a president and at least one, but often several, vice presidents.

In addition, the board consists of other offices such as general secretaries, sports directors, technical directors, general managers and team managers.

How long the elected persons are in the assigned office varies, sometimes significantly.

However, a change of office often takes place after a period of four years.
