European Cup: Toulouse overcomes Ulster and qualifies for the quarterfinals

2022-04-16T21:24:19.610Z

Defeated by six points in the first leg, the reigning European champions went to beat Ulster by seven this Saturday evening in Belfast (23-30).

The mission was complicated, but not impossible.

When they went to face Ulster on their home turf, in the round of 16 second leg of the Champions Cup, the reigning European champions Toulouse had six points to recover from their defeat in the first leg (20-26).

A defeat that left the door open to all hopes.

The Toulouse opened the scoring in the second minute, thanks to a penalty kicked from almost 35 meters by Thomas Ramos (0-3).

But it was the Northern Irish who, in the process, scored the first try of the meeting, following a loss of the ball from Dupont (7-3).

Seriously, the people of Toulouse obviously did not let go.

After being led 10-6, they end up scoring, in quick succession, two tries before the 30th minute, by Ramos (22nd, 10-13) then Ntamack, who went flat after an interception and a crossing of the field (27th , 10-20).

At that time, Toulouse caught up with his handicap.

But just before the break, Ulster regained a short advantage over both games thanks to a second try (38th, 17-20).

Upon returning from the locker room, Toulouse therefore leads by three points but, on paper, Toulouse remains eliminated.

Especially since in the 54th, it was Ulster who regained their six-point lead, on a penalty (20-20).

The second act is much less uninhibited than the first, Ulster and Toulouse neutralize each other and impose a rough physical challenge.

Too rough, perhaps, on the Ulster side.

After conceding another penalty from Ramos (20-23), the Ulstermen lose O'toole, who came into play three minutes earlier and was guilty of a nasty shoulder blow on Jelonch.

At 15 against 14 and with a quarter of an hour to play, Toulouse got a scare, then crucified Ulster thanks to a try from Antoine Dupont (23-30, 75th).

Three tries, three conversions, three penalties: the Toulouse evening was a faultless one that ended in a

happy ending

, with this qualification thanks to a small point lead over the two games (49-50).

The magic of European confrontations back and forth.

The number: 1

Like Montpellier earlier in the day, Stade Toulousain took out their calculator this evening and did not exceed a hair's breadth.

By winning with a seven-point difference, they did not score a point more than the only one necessary to qualify, and go up the six-point lead taken by Ulster in the first leg.

In the afternoon, Montpellier performed the same sleight of hand, in a slightly different configuration as they lost 13 points to Harlequins (33-20), after taking a 14-point lead at the go (40-26).

We'll be happy with that!

The statement: “We had a lot of courage to come back like that”

Anthony Jelonch, at the microphone of BeIN Sports: “It was very hard tonight, they put up a big fight but we were able to respond.

We had a lot of courage to come back like that, to score this try four minutes from the end.

I'm very happy for the team and we're going to play a big match at Munster now, in the quarter-finals.

We had said all week that we had to be strong in the rucks, we had to win them balls and tonight we won them important balls at certain times.

I'm very proud of the team, it's great.

We had lost six points last week, and to qualify by one point we knew it was going to be very hard, but we did it.
