DFB Cup: SC Freiburg and Christian Streich win at Hamburger SV

2022-04-19T21:55:49.507Z

It remains with the last HSV Cup triumph in 1987. That is a satisfaction for the Schlotterbeck family - Freiburg coach Christian Streich also played a supporting role at the time. He is facing the best season of his tenure.

Penalty of the season:

Freiburg's Nico Schlotterbeck slipped on the edge of the opponent's penalty area and fell on the seat of his pants.

And while he was sitting there, Moritz Heyer tried to clear the ball that Schlotterbeck couldn't reach and hit his opponent in the neck.

After studying the pictures, referee Deniz Aytekin was left with only one decision: penalty.

Curious and bitter for HSV, because Vincenzo Grifo safely converted to 3-0, the preliminary decision.

Result:

Hamburger SV lost 1:3 (0:3) against SC Freiburg in the semifinals of the DFB Cup.

Here is the match report.

First half:

The hosts started bravely, but were penalized twice for not clearing the ball in time: first Nils Petersen scored with a header (11th minute), then Nicolas Höfler with a deflected shot from 18 meters (17th).

Anssi Suhonen missed the great opportunity to score the goal, but failed to get through to Mark Flekken from ten meters out after a great one-two from Sonny Kittel and Ludovit Reis (26').

Grifo increased the penalty with a penalty (35th) against Hamburg, who were still acting offensively.

Three away goals in a cup semi-final?

That was the first time: In 1984 Bayern led 3:2 at half-time in the legendary 6:6 after extra time at Schalke 04.

Full house:

For the first time since February 22, 2020, the Volksparkstadion was sold out with 57,000 spectators.

At that time, the city derby ended 0: 2 (0: 2) against FC St. Pauli.

Just three players in the HSV starting eleven have ever experienced a full home stadium: Bakery Jatta, Kittel and Daniel Heuer Fernandes.

They still have to wait for a win in front of almost 60,000.

Second half:

Despite the clear lead, the encounter remained entertaining.

Jatta forced Flekken to make a save with a header from a tight angle (50'), while Roland Sallai on the other end completed an attack with a sharp shot to the side netting (54').

The atmosphere was right, the degrees weren't.

The sixth-placed player in the second division, five points behind after 30 matchdays and with little chance of promotion, tried to score the consolation goal and was rewarded in the 88th minute: Robert Glatzel, who had missed the first good opportunity early in the game, still scored with a head ( 88.).

This did not change anything in the Freiburg victory.

So it stays the same: MSV Duisburg remains the last second division team in the cup final (2011), the only cup win by a lower-class club was in 1992 by Hannover 96.

Schlotterbecks and HSV:

When HSV last won the cup in 1987, a player from the defeated Stuttgarter Kickers scored an own goal in the 90th minute.

His name: Niels Schlotterbeck, uncle of the current Freiburg Nico and Keven.

The small family revenge followed 35 years later.

By the way, the supporting actor back then at the Stuttgarter Kickers: a 22-year-old defensive player named Christian Streich, who did not play in the cup final after he was allowed to play for ten minutes in the 3-0 semi-final win against Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Prank before the coronation:

It could be the most successful season of the "eternal" prank at SC Freiburg.

In the league, the club is just one point behind the Champions League in fifth place, in the cup SC has now reached the final for the first time.

However, Streich has already won the cup three times – with the Freiburg Juniors.

Also present at the last victory in 2011: the current SC captain Christian Günter.

HSV coach Tim Walter is the 15th coach since Streich took over in Freiburg in January 2012.

The seventh is cheering:

In Cologne, Hoffenheim and Berlin they will have welcomed Freiburg's victory with benevolence.

Should a team from Bundesliga place one to six win the cup, then the seventh place would also get a starting place in the Conference League.

The chances are excellent for the three remaining candidates Leipzig (4th), Freiburg (5th) and Union Berlin (6th).

New title holder:

RB Leipzig and Union Berlin (Wednesday, 8.45 p.m., TV: ARD) will face each other in the second cup final.

Since HSV is the only one of the four semi-finalists who has already won the cup to be eliminated, a club will be included in the list of winners for the first time on May 21st.
