The football world united last night (Monday) in sympathy with the pain of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Manchester United star and his partner, Georgina Rodriguez, took to social media to say that one of their twins did not survive the birth earlier this week.

The official accounts of Manchester United on social media consoled: "Your pain is our pain. We send love and reinforcements to you and your family."

Team player Marcus Rashford wrote: "Our thoughts are with you and with my brother Georgina. I'm sorry."

Real Madrid, in which CR7 starred for nearly a decade, also expressed sympathy: "Real Madrid, its president and all the management were sorry to hear of the death of one of the children of our dear Cristiano and his partner Georgina Rodriguez. We share their pain and wish them condolences."

Ronaldo's sister, Catia Aviero, wrote: "I love you with all my heart. I wish God would take care of everything and strengthen your way. Our little angel is already in God's bosom and the baby born healthy and strong will teach us that only love matters."

Ronaldo and Georgina last night issued a statement announcing the tragedy: "With immense sorrow we must announce that our child has passed away. This is the greatest pain a parent can feel and only the birth of the girl gives us strength to go through this moment with some hope and joy.

" We want Thank you to all the doctors and nurses for all their concern and support.

We are broken from the loss and seek privacy in the difficult time we are going through.

Our child, you are our angel.

We will always love you. "
