World champion Max Verstappen won the first sprint of the Formula 1 season and thus secured first place on the grid for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.

At the Ferrari home game, the Red Bull driver reached the finish line in Imola after 21 laps ahead of Scuderia star Charles Leclerc and his Mexican team-mate Sergio Pérez.

Fourth was Carlos Sainz in the second Ferrari.

Verstappen had already secured pole for the 21-lap race at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari on Friday.

Leclerc initially won the start on Saturday, but Verstappen passed again on the penultimate lap.

With the victory, the Dutchman brought in eight championship points.

Leclerc is still clearly leading the championship with 78 points before the fourth race of the season on Sunday (3 p.m., TV: RTL and Sky).

Verstappen has 33 points.

"It will definitely be different tomorrow," said Verstappen, who was successful for the second time in the fourth sprint in Formula 1 history: "In the end, Charles' tires wore off and I was able to start my maneuver." Leclerc said: "It's still another front row start.

The support of the fans is gigantic.

I am looking forward to tomorrow."

Hamilton only 14.

Ex-world champion Sebastian Vettel finished 13th in the Aston Martin and missed his first points of the season, as did Mick Schumacher im Haas, who finished tenth.

For record world champion Lewis Hamilton and his teammate George Russell in the Mercedes, it was only enough for places 14 and 11.

The outcome of the sprint, in which the winner now receives eight points, decides the starting grid for Sunday's race.

Three sprints are planned for the current season.
