SV Werder Bremen clearly won the top game of the 2nd Bundesliga against FC Schalke 04 4-1 and regained the lead in the table.

The game report of the DeichStube.

Gelsenkirchen - What an exclamation mark in the promotion race of the 2nd league!

The weakened

SV Werder Bremen

celebrated

an almost unbelievable 4:1 (2:0) victory at

FC Schalke 04 in the top game and took over the lead of the table from the shocked miners.

They had all won their first five games under their new coach Mike Büskens, but against

Ole Werner 's

and his coaching team optimally adjusted Bremer they had no chance.

After a corner trick, Ilia Gruev (8th) and Niclas Füllkrug (26th) put the guests on the road to victory early on.

Then Marvin Ducksch ended his short goal drought and made everything clear with a brace (51st and 54th).

Simon Terodde's Schalke goal came too late (88').

Werder had forgotten the series of three games without a win in a row (all 1:1)

thanks to the clear

victory . Werder now has the best chance of a direct return to the Bundesliga!

Werder Bremen against Schalke 04: Ilia Gruev dusts off - the early lead in the top game

Werder coach

Ole Werner had to improvise quite a bit after the numerous failures on the defensive (Toprak, Veljkovic and Groß), but did so as expected: Nicolai Rapp, Marco Friedl and Anthony Jung formed the back three, the young

Ilia Gruev

was allowed to play six

ran – and Mitchell Weiser and Felix Agu acted on the outside.

At least the offensive of

SV Werder Bremen

could start with a regular cast: substitute captain Leonardo Bittencourt and Romano Schmid should stage the attackers Marvin Ducksch and Niclas Füllkrug.

And that worked straight away: after a long ball from Schmid, Füllkrug headed for the Schalke goal, but shot just wide under pressure (1').

It was a clear signal:

Werder Bremen

didn't want to hide despite or maybe even because of the personnel problems.

The green-whites were well prepared for the game against

Schalke 04

, especially for the set pieces.

Unlike usual, Ducksch took his first corner briefly on Bittencourt, the ball deliberately landed in the free-standing Weiser in the penalty area.

His shot, which was not particularly dangerous, sent 04 keeper Martin Fraisl forward – and there Gruev swept the ball away with a header to make it 1-0 (8').

Werder Bremen against Schalke 04: huge cheers!

Niclas Füllkrug increases before the break

Werder Bremen

finally

took the lead again.

That didn't work out for three games.

And Werder didn't give up, Friedl immediately had the chance to make it 2-0 with a header (13 ').

Bremen defended well at the back, putting top scorer Simon Terodde out of action or offside.

In the 22nd minute it got hairy: After Füllkrug lost the ball, a Schalke counterattack rolled in the direction of the Bremen goal, Terodde managed to finish, but shot over it.

And that was also due to Ducksch, who had sprinted back and disturbed the attacker.

At Werder everyone really fought for everyone, no one was too bad for a path.

A great deal of cleverness or, to put it better: optimal preparation, was added to the great effort.

Ducksch also took the next corner briefly on Bittencourt, the ball came again to Weiser in the penalty area, whose cross

Niclas Füllkrug headed

in to make it 2-0 (26 ').

Huge cheers also on the Werder bench, where Christian Vander in particular was hearted.

The goalkeeper coach is responsible for set pieces and had obviously discovered a weakness at

FC Schalke 04

.

Werder Bremen against Schalke 04: Marvin Ducksch with a brace - Werder leaders again

The hosts were shocked – and

Werder Bremen

wanted to take advantage of that.

Ducksch aimed at the post (28th) shortly after the 2-0.

The goalscorer just can't score anymore, that's what the Werder fans thought.

As in the 42nd minute, when Ducksch missed the 3-0, well served by Füllkrug.

And shortly after the break, his clever Ducksch free kick only hit the post (48th).

But this 28-year-old has a very special quality, he just doesn't let missed opportunities get him down.

So he tried it again immediately after good preparation from the jug and literally forced his luck: Schalke's Ko Itakura deflected the ball unstoppably to make it 3-0 in Bremen (51').

The relief was

Marvin Ducksch

clearly noted.

And it got even better for him because Itakura helped him again.

The Japanese again gave a decisive impulse to a Ducksch shot (53').

4-0 after less than an hour – what

Werder madness in the sold-out Veltins Arena of

FC Schalke 04

with 60,000 spectators

, in which of course only the 6,000 or so Werder fans cheered.

They were allowed to continue celebrating because

Werder Bremen

didn't let much burn.

Only shortly before the end Friedl and Co. were not careful and allowed Terodde to make up some of the result (88th).

No problem, Bremen can now complete the

climb

against Holstein Kiel, Erzgebirge Aue and Jahn Regensburg .

Final score: 4:1 for Werder.

>>> UPDATE LIVETICKER <<<

3:22 p.m .:

Werder deserves a 4-1 win against Schalke and is now the leader of the table again.

Efficiency was the deciding factor at the end of the day, Ducksch has found his way back to his old goal threat.

Schalke, on the other hand, were not completely without a chance, but were largely unimaginative and uninspired in their offensive game.

Defensive mistakes were also severely punished by Werder.

3:21 p.m .: And that was it!

Werder deservedly won 4:1 against Schalke.

90 min +3:

Schalke penetrates Werder's penalty area again, but there's no getting around it.

90 min +1:

There are three minutes of added time.

88 minutes: Goal for Schalke!

It's the connection hit to 1:4.

Churlinov puts on well, Terodde uses the ball.

85 min.:

Weiser goes out, Mbom comes for him.

In addition, Agu will be replaced by Schönfelder.

84 min:

Churlinov crosses into Werder's penalty area, but Itakura doesn't have enough power with his header.

The ball goes out of the goal.

Bittencourt has previously seen a yellow card, it is his 7th card.

81 min:

Dinkci storms towards the Schalke goal, but his shot rolls miserably through the penalty area and out of bounds.

No danger for Fraisl this time.

78 minutes:

Marvin Ducksch is substituted, the double packer has done his job.

Dinkci is new to the game for Werder.

In addition, Mai comes for Gruev.

Meanwhile, a chip cross from Calhanoglu goes into goal.

76 mins

: 1-0 goalscorer Ilia Gruev signals to the bench that he wants to be substituted.

He seems plagued by cramps.

No wonder, after all, the lively midfielder ripped off endless kilometers today.

74 mins:

Just under 15 minutes to go.

Can Schalke think of anything else offensively?

Werder's defensive league knows how to prevent individual actions, but they themselves are still looking for the goal.

71 min:

Mike Büskens saves Zalazar, who failed to show any efficiency in his actions today.

Idrizi comes into play for him, who should give Schalke's offensive game a new touch.

68 min:

Gruev tries from a distance, but the Werder shooter to make it 1-0 is denied a goal this time.

The ball sails past Fraisl's box to the left.

67 mins:

Werder can hardly blame themselves.

Scored two goals, there's a zero at the back, Ole Werner's team can withstand the pressure.

Defensive shortcomings were exploited coldly, with a bit of luck Ducksch could even have made it 3-0 for the green-whites.

Schalke, on the other hand, is not without a chance, but not necessarily enough in its offensive efforts.

Ergo, the 2-0 lead at half-time reflects the course of the game quite well.

A cross to Simon Terodde, who appears in front of Pavlenka but can't get the ball.

But: It would have been offside anyway.

16 min:

Werder breaks out of their own penalty area and starts a switch action, which, however, comes to nothing in Schalke's penalty area.

1:12 p.m .:

How does Werder actually want to stop Schalke’s Simon Terodde?

!

observed.

Then, at the end, he briefly praised the "high individual quality" of players like Simon Terodde and Marius Bülter, but quickly reiterated: "It's all the more important for us to let that develop as little as possible.

We'll have a clear idea of how to defend it.” Confident instead of worried – that's how it should work at Schalke.
