Barcelona announced this Tuesday the renewal of the contract of Ronald Araujo, 23, until 2026. In this way, the Uruguayan center-back extends his bond, which expired in June 2023, for three more seasons.

The defender will have a termination clause of 1,000 million euros and will sign his new contract next Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Camp Nou.

"With Araujo, Barcelona has a central defender for ten years or more," Xavi Hernández stressed at the beginning of April, when it seemed that the negotiation between the Uruguayan's agent and Barça's director of football, Mateu Alemany, was stalling.

The technician was clear.

"Ronald is a guarantee," he insisted.

Xavi did not want to lose one of the central defenders with the most projection in Europe, a key player in his game system and one of the players who dedicates the most time to him.

“Xavi works a lot with Ronald in individual and collective aspects.

He has grown a lot since he arrived at Barcelona ”, they explain from the Uruguayan's environment.

For this reason, when the negotiations dragged on, the technician grew impatient.

"You have to renew it yes or yes," he asked.

Araujo was also restless when the agreement did not come.

The player's message to his agent had been forceful: "I want to stay in Barcelona."

However, the central representative and Alemany could not reach an agreement.

The club wanted to adapt the link to the new salary scale led by Pedri and Ansu Fati and a five-year contract.

The player, on the other hand, preferred fewer years.

In fact, as explained by the central defender, money was not a priority for Araujo, who rejected offers from the Premier.

“The key has been him.

He is happy in Barcelona.

It is an example, it is a luxury to train players like Ronald.

He is a beloved profile in the locker room”, Xavi completed.

"Araujo is the typical player who forms a group," explains a Barcelona employee.

The Uruguayan is the leader of the new generation, he organizes meals among the youngest members of the squad and does not hide when he has to speak after the games, without paying attention to the result.

“He is one of those who never have a problem talking.

He doesn't care if the team has played a bad game or if he hasn't made a mistake.

He does not hide, ”the same sources conclude.

It is the second time that the center-back has opted for Barcelona.

In August 2018, Barça paid 1.7 million euros to Boston River (Uruguay).

At that time, Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid were also following in the footsteps of Araujo, who had already made his debut in the Celeste under-20 team.

"Atlético had been following him for a long time and a few weeks before he signed for Barcelona, Ramón Martínez [at the time, director of the Madrid academy] called me to ask me about him," explained Sergio Cabrera, coach at the time. With which Araujo debuted in the Rentistas first team, in the Uruguayan second division.

After a season at Barça B, in the 2019-2020 campaign he made his debut in the Barça first team with Ernesto Valverde.

He lasted 14 minutes on the field against Sevilla at the Camp Nou: a direct red card after stopping an attack by Chicharito Hernández.

He played five games with Quique Setién and consolidated with Ronald Koeman (42 games).

With Xavi on the bench, the Uruguayan has participated in 28 duels and has scored three goals.
