Although Holocaust Martyrs 'and Heroes' Remembrance Day is dedicated to mourning customs, every year the Jewish people also mark small "victories" during it, also in sports.
Tonight (Wednesday), the two Israeli players of the German champions Alba Berlin, Yuval Sussman and Tamir Blatt, went to the league game against Hamburg wearing a black ribbon on their jerseys, and Sussman even made an emotional tribute to his grandmother when he presented her last name - Gastren - on the back of the jersey.
The grandmother of ex-Maccabi Tel Aviv, 88-year-old Lila, is a Holocaust survivor.
Laila was born in Warsaw, the capital of Poland, in 1934, survived the Holocaust with her older sister Shoshana, and immigrated to Israel with the "Children of Tehran". In "Anders' Army" with Menachem Begi, and did not return alive. Yuval Sussman used to visit his grandmother every evening of Holocaust Remembrance Day, so this evening has great significance for him. The very large family of his late grandfather Nahum Sussman also perished in the Holocaust, in Eastern Europe.
