Four After The War: Liverpool Goes On All Degrees Israel today

2022-04-29T10:54:38.606Z

Klopp's Liverpool could become eternal on May 28, if they manage to be the second in history to complete a quadruple win • The road to all the titles is open, but they will need romantic help from the past

For six and a half years now Liverpool fans have been living the dream.

Since Jürgen Klopp joined the team in October 2015, their team has returned to being what it was in the distant past - the best of them all.

Liverpool's expected win over Villarreal on Wednesday night was another step towards the Champions League final on May 28 in Paris, but it was also another step towards the ultimate achievement, the one that will put Liverpool at the moment as the biggest football team of all time.

There is exactly one month left until the end of the season, eight games, that if Liverpool wins them all they could win a "quadruple" - four titles in one season: the League Cup (which they have already won), the English Cup, the Premier League and the Champions League.

No English team, ever, has won all four titles in one season.

Manchester United were very close in 1999.

Alex Ferguson's team then won the "Treble" - championship, trophy and Champions League, but missed the League Cup.

Rio Ferdinand, a former Manchester United stopper and now one of England's top commentators, said: "That should be Liverpool's goal. If they achieve it, they will become immortal, eternal. They will be above any other English football team in history."

The fourth most important title, the League Cup, has already been achieved, as mentioned.

It happened when Liverpool beat Chelsea in a penalty shootout on 27 February.

The two will meet at Wembley once again in two weeks, this time in the FA Cup final.

Assuming Liverpool do not drop their two-goal advantage in a rematch against Villarreal next Tuesday, the place in the Champions League final in Paris will be secured, and it remains only to see who will be the rival - Real Madrid or Manchester City.

So in the Cup and the Champions League it depends solely on Liverpool.

If she wins, the titles will be hers.

When it comes to the league, it's a little different.

Five rounds before the end of the season Manchester City are ahead of Liverpool by a point, and if Pep Guardiola's team wins all its remaining games, Liverpool will settle for runners-up.

If City drop even two points, Klopp's team will again be dependent on itself.

Just a month to wait

It's time to check out what exactly is left for the big two in the league, when the last line of the marathon comes in tomorrow, when Liverpool will host Newcastle at 2.30pm and five hours later Leeds will host City.

The story will be similar in the next two rounds, with Liverpool playing one day before City.

Each victory will move her to first place for at least 24 hours - which will put enormous pressure on Guardiola and his players.

Next Saturday Liverpool will host Tottenham, and the next day City will host Newcastle.

On Tuesday, May 10, Steven Gerrard, Aston Villa coach and former Liverpool star, will host Klopp, and the next day City will head to Wolves' pitch.

Then the creators will turn over.

On Saturday, May 14, Liverpool will play in the cup final against Chelsea, which will allow City to take command a day later, when they play in the league against West Ham.

Liverpool will complete their missing game on Tuesday, May 17, away against Southampton.

Then comes the final and decisive round: Sunday, May 22, when both teams will play at the same time, at home - Liverpool vs. Wolves, City vs. Aston Villa.

And yes, there are quite a few Liverpool fans who fantasize that Gerard, who will one day be nominated for Klopp - who yesterday extended his contract by two years until 2026 - will help them win the championship.

Six teams have won the Treble in the past, and two have done so twice.

Cruyff's Ajax in 1972, Eindhoven in 1988, United in 1999, Guardiola and Messi's memorable Barcelona in 2009, Luis Enrique's Barça in 2015, Mourinho's Inter in 2010, and Bayern Munich in 2013 and also in 2020.

But only one team won the Quadruple.

It was the 1967 Celtic that won the Scottish Championship, Cup and League Cup - and for dessert defeated Inter in the Champions League final in Lisbon.

Although many of the "Lisbon Lions", manager Joke Stein and the players are no longer alive, they have become eternal.

The same will happen to Klopp and his players, if they manage to complete one of the greatest achievements in the history of world football.

There is only a month left to wait and see.
