World number one Novak Djokovic began his quest to win his fourth title in the Madrid Open with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Gael Monfils today, extending his unbeaten record against the French player to 18-0.
The result ensured Djokovic remained number one in the world rankings while giving Monfils a disgraceful record for having the worst single-player record of the Open era.
Djokovic met Monfils for the first time at the 2005 US Open, but today's match was only the second between them on clay.
Earlier, Andrei Rublev, who won the Serbian Open last month after defeating Djokovic in the final, survived an early test when he bounced back from one set down to beat British promising Jack Draper 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Rublev trailed 3-0 in the deciding set, but Draper suffered a muscle strain that allowed the Russian to win the match and advance to the last 16.
