To the Glory: The Most Desirable Beacon Peaks in Israeli Sports Israel today

2022-05-04T17:08:04.002Z

The angel of the football team • The people who made us shiver in Tokyo • The coach at the age of 50 is still on reserve • And the basketball player who won the cancer - and is approaching the Premier League • Israel Today reporters pick their beacon records

Dr. Mark Rosnovsky | The Man and the Secret Potion

Dr. Mark Rosnovsky deserves to light a beacon. For 44 years he served as the doctor of the Israeli national football team - and put on his feet the biggest stars who wore the national uniform. Dr. Rosnovsky's secret overcame all doubts.

It's not only helping people recover, but doing so with endless dedication.

Sometimes Rosnovsky would be called in to treat players who vomited due to pressure, for coaches who wanted to hear from him a sedative siren that these or other injured could play - and he was always there.

It is easiest to see the people on whom the spotlight is directed in the center of the stage, it is also natural.

But Dr. Rosnovsky was the one who in most cases helped the show go on, even if there were difficulties along the way.

Coaches went, players retired, but the Doctor was always there, until he finished respectfully, as he deserved.

So now is the time to give him the honor and the torch.

And to the glory of the State of Israel.

Linoy Ashram |

Parsha at the peak

August 7, 2021, just before Shabbat lunch break.

An entire country was fascinated by the television screen, and watched the artistic gymnast Linoy Ashram.

Everyone was watching every one of those throws in the air, every ball roll or hoop catch, and would only wish for one thing - to see her win a score that would place her at the top of the podium at the Tokyo Olympics.

Ashram provided a finale from the films (literally), surprised the dominance of the industry, the Russian sisters Dina and Arina Avrina - and managed to finish in first place.

Our skin turned into duck skin when "Hatikva" was played in the "Aryaka" hall again, after a week earlier we were moved by the gymnast Artium Dolgofiat.

About a month ago, Ashram announced her retirement.

She interrupted a short and glorious career, during which she brought hundreds of medals, hoisted the Israeli flag all over the world and promoted the industry into which thousands of young girls already want to enter.

Sheina and Sefi

She slipped into the history books

It's hard to find a more inspiring story than that of Paralympic skier Sheina and Sefi.

The 20-year-old athlete made history last February, when she became the first Israeli athlete to participate in the Paralympic Winter Games, and competed in the giant slalom in Beijing.

Vespi was 3 years old when she was involved in a car accident and lost her left leg.

A bus that deviated from its route hit the family car at Kadarim Junction.

The force of the blow overturned the vehicle several times, and Shayna was fatally injured as a result.

She grew up in a religious home, so she also does not compete on Saturday, and this fact also caused her to miss some of the Paralympic Games.

For her determination and for the fact that she put Israel on the map for the first time in Paralympic winter sports as well - she deserves to carry a beacon.

And to the glory of the State of Israel.

Radiant Giorno

The invincible

About seven years ago, in coaching the cadet team, he sat down next to the father of one of the players.

I noticed that he is really proud of the child, his performance and his special personality.

It became clear to me that his name, Moti, is the father of the team coordinator Koren Giorno, who was at the time one of the future talents of Israeli basketball.

After a few months, a tumor was found in Koren's leg.

I immediately thought of the proud father and the dream that was cut short for the child.

But Koren did not break for a moment.

For almost a year he fought cancer - and defeated it.

When he tried to return to play, it turned out that he was suffering from crises in his leg, and for four years underwent two complex surgeries, at the same time strengthening and recovering from the disease.

In the last year and a half, he has returned to play, and is already an integral part of Kiryat Ata, which is competing in the semifinals of the national playoffs.

"I have already fulfilled my dream," he told Israel Today in an interview in the past.

Today I understand why Mutti's father is proud.

It is not appropriate for him to light a beacon.

Jacob Beninson

King of the pool

The coach of the Israeli Paralympic swimming team, Yaakov Beninson, is about to set a beacon on the 74th Independence Day of the State of Israel.

Beninson, 48, immigrated to Israel from Russia in 2000, just as he was graduating with a degree in sports.

He was looking for a job in swimming lessons, and in June of that year he was invited to work at Ilan Haifa.

He was assigned to a swimming group, initially for only three months.

When he came to Israel, Beninson knew he was going to work with athletes with disabilities.

He first met Inbal Pizarro, and with her talent and training methods - the two brought international achievements.

Very quickly, his success also passed to the Israeli team.

Over the years, his trainees have won dozens of medals at world and European championships, but he only achieved the climax last year, at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

The team, led by him, returned to Israel with no less than eight (!) Medals, six of them gold.

Barak Peleg |

Between the General Staff Reconnaissance Squadron and Kfar Blum

A little less than a year ago, when Hapoel Galil Elyon was in the middle of the playoff final series of the national league against Hapoel Afula, coach Barak Peleg, who dreamed of registering a historic promotion to the Premier League, showed up for the reserve.

Almost 50 years old, yes?

It is unusual in the Israeli landscape: the embodiment of investment, values, sacrifice, model and role model.

Peleg was born in the religious kibbutz Lavi, where he grew up, was educated and started playing basketball.

He began his professional career only at the age of 22, after military service in the General Staff Reconnaissance Regiment. Although he lost critical years and started from the bottom, he reached the top of Israeli basketball, played in the Euroleague with Hapoel Jerusalem, wore the Israeli national team uniform, and even received offers from abroad.

He was an excellent defensive player and the glue of every team, a consensus in the locker room.

In the past, he noted that the background he came from - the kibbutz movement, religion and his combat service - contributed greatly to his career.

In all these years, to this day, he continues to serve in the reserve.

And to the glory of the State of Israel.
