The oldest living Grand Prix winner of Formula 1 died at the age of 90: The premier class mourns Tony Brooks.

London – Mourning in Formula 1: Former pilot Tony Brooks is dead. This is reported by several British media, citing his daughter Giulia.

The oldest living Grand Prix winner died - Brooks was 90 years old.

Charles Anthony Standish “Tony” Brooks was one of the defining figures in the premier class in the 1950s, competing against great drivers like Juan Manuel Fangio, Alberto Ascari and Stirling Moss.

He contested a total of 38 World Championship races, ten times he was on the podium, six of them at the top.

Formula 1 mourns Tony Brooks: "He was part of a special group of drivers"

Brooks seemed to like it especially in Germany, where he won twice: in 1958 the Englishman won at the Nürburgring, a year later in a Ferrari at the AVUS in Berlin.

In 1959 he narrowly missed winning the world title (all Formula 1 world champions in the overview), he had to admit defeat to the Australian Jack Brabham.

Formula 1 Managing Director Stefano Domenicali paid tribute to Brooks' achievements and his commitment to the racing series: "I was sad when I heard the news that Tony Brooks had died.

He was part of a special group of riders who were pioneers and pushed the boundaries in a time of great risk.

We will miss him and our thoughts are with his family these days.”

Tony Brooks: Formula 1's 'crazy dentist' is dead

Brooks was born in 1932 in Dukinfield, England, just outside Manchester.

Brooks was also known as the "crazy dentist" because of his dental studies.

For his Formula 1 career, however, he gave up his medical career.

He had started the same because of his father - who, as a dentist, naturally expected that his son would one day follow in his footsteps.

Brooks was considered a fair sportsman and was quite popular in the paddock.

Brooks left motorsport in 1961 at the age of only 29 - he had "seen too many friends die", as he once revealed.

The cars, however, were still close to his heart: he restored old racing cars and was a welcome guest at numerous motorsport events.

The premier class celebrates its premiere in Miami at the weekend.

Would Brooks have liked the spectacular Formula 1 show?
