The 105th edition of the Grand Tour - the Giro d'Italia will set off tomorrow (Friday), on a three-week journey, and a total distance of 3,446 kilometers in total, with a cumulative climb of over 50,000 meters.
Just like in 2018 when the first segments began in Israel, this time the traveling circus of one of the biggest bike events will open this time on Hungarian soil, with an opening segment that left the capital Budapest - which was supposed to host two years ago and was postponed because of the corona. Towards Italy for the continuation of the difficult journey.
The one who will try to be a significant factor in this year's race is the Israeli team "Israel Premier Tech" in its fifth appearance at this event, but for the first time without any Israeli rider when the lead will be taken on the Italian sprinter Giacomo Nizulo.
The main goal of the team is to achieve victories and win the outstanding sprinter shirt in the entire race.
The team's professional manager, Charl Karlström, explained that the decision not to place an Israeli rider was mainly due to the team's clear goals in the Gyro 2022 (sprints with the experienced Italian accelerator), and the serious injury in the crash of Guy Sagiv who was nominated for Gyro but is only recovering these days.
Guy Niv, who has already successfully completed two editions of the Giro, fell ill in Corona and returned to full training only in the last few days.
"Our four Israelis have long since proven their worth in the Grand Tour and will be very strong candidates in the next races, including the Tour de France and the Spanish Volta," said Carlström.
