SEEN FROM ELSEWHERE - Mildred Bruce was the first woman to be fined for speeding in the United Kingdom. Maria Teresa de Filippis was the first driver to participate in a Formula 1 world championship. Both were born to race, on the roads and on the racing circuits.

These pioneers often came from the aristocracy.

It was usually their father's, brother's or partner's passion for motor racing that sparked this interest in them.

The first participants in races caused a sensation.

The car was a luxury item that only the wealthiest could afford.

To participate in the races, money was needed.

And above all, audacity.

Mildred Bruce, fast and rebellious

Born in 1895, Mildred Bruce was the first woman to be fined for speeding in the UK.

She was barely fifteen when she sped through London in a sidecar, her collie in the basket.

She received a ticket and the judge forbade her to drive a motorcycle until she was sixteen.

In 1920, she bought her first car.

She was going to receive many more fines for speeding.

In 1926, she married Victor Bruce, winner of the Rallye Monte-Carlo that year.
