OM-Feyenoord: favorites and claws of our special correspondent

2022-05-06T01:52:08.524Z

Beyond the raw result, find out what caught the attention of our special correspondent at the Vélodrome, Thursday, for the meeting OM-Feyenoord (0-0) in the semi-final second leg of the Europa League Conference.

FAVORITES

Rodier in the good shots

The former Nantes player is not the strongest, the fastest, the most technical.

However, he has this essential quality to succeed in a club like Olympique de Marseille: the ability to withstand pressure and play his game even when it's hard.

It's not given to everyone... Suffering on the first leg, Valentin Rongier clearly raised his voice on the return, despite this 0-0 synonymous with elimination.

The best Marseillais on the meadow was him, always available, often inspired to break the lines.

With a little more conviction, he could even have been the savior with that shot from the left in the second half.

In any case, Rongier is a boy you can count on, he showed it again on Thursday evening.

Mandanda still at the level

Relegated to the rank of understudy this season, Steve Mandanda will have had a good heart against bad luck and responded when called upon.

Often in the Europa League Conference, this competition in the form of candy for the Olympian legend.

Thursday, he did the job again, showing that he is still present at 37 years old.

Under contract until 2024, he will have to make an important decision next summer.

In the meantime, OM can be proud of their emblematic goalkeeper, irreproachable until the end.

Taulier.

The Velodrome on fire

Even without its North Bend, closed after the incidents of the previous round against PAOK Salonika, the Vélodrome had something to give chills on Thursday evening.

The Marseille cauldron was in fusion from start to finish, pushing its proteges.

Unfortunately for the Marseille fans, the players were not accustomed to the same gentle madness (see elsewhere)… The stadium nevertheless applauded its warriors, who lacked more talent than envy on Thursday evening, against a team of Feyenoord well within reach.

The overflows observed outside the stadium, Wednesday and again Thursday, however tarnish the picture (see elsewhere).

CLAW STRIKES

What a waste

Situations, the Marseillais could have had a certain number, even after the exit of Dimitri Payet.

Still it would have been necessary to show itself just technically.

And that really wasn't the case.

Missed checks, insecure passes, harmless shots… OM could have played all night without scoring.

In any case, that's the feeling that Jorge Sampaoli's players gave.

A player like Amine Harit should have been able to enlighten the game. Boys like Arek Milik or Bamba Dieng were sorely lacking in precision.

Ditto for the entrants, the circles, a little everyone in fact.

It was easy for Feyenoord.

Far too easy...

Overflows before and after the match

We are not going to venture here to determine whose fault it is.

One thing is certain: the incidents observed Wednesday at the Old Port and Thursday, before the match and again after, are regrettable, detestable.

Clashes between supporters or with the police that do not grow anyone.

All while the Velodrome was huge.

It lacked a touch of madness

After two crazy evenings in the Champions League, during Villarreal-Liverpool (2-3) and Real-City (3-1 ap), we are even more hungry.

OM never managed to pack the match, to put madness in this game.

Admittedly, the repeated faults of Feyenoord made it possible to break the lack of rhythm of the Marseillais.

But that's not enough to explain everything.

Jorge Sampaoli's players lacked accuracy, it's a fact, but also and above all risk-taking.

So much so that the supporters of Olympique de Marseille undoubtedly left the “Vél” with a nasty taste of unfinished business.

Especially since the third in the Dutch championship are not really impressive… Feyenoord nevertheless fully deserved their qualification for the final against AS Roma, in Albania, on May 25th.
