British cyclist Simon Yates has won the first of two individual time trials in Hungary's 105th Giro d'Italia.

The 2018 Vuelta winner won the 9.2 flat kilometers in the streets of the Hungarian capital Budapest in 11:50 minutes, three seconds ahead of opening winner Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands, who thus took the pink jersey of the overall leader defended.

Van der Poel is the third Dutchman to ride in pink at the Giro after two stages.

After Erik Breukink (1987), Tom Dumoulin (2016) succeeded.

Dumoulin (Jumbo-Visma) finished third on Saturday, five seconds behind Yates.

Kämna had led for a long time

Lennard Kämna finished the race in 12:07 minutes in eighth place.

The 2020 Tour de France stage winner had even led for a long time, but in the end he was 17 seconds behind Yates.

“That was a very good time trial, good for my confidence.

It showed me that I have the power," said the 25-year-old from the German team Bora-hansgrohe, who had already set the scene at the start on Friday when he was unsuccessful with a sharp attack just before the finish line.

Emanuel Buchmann, on the other hand, fell on the 9.2 kilometers through Budapest and lost an important 57 seconds to day winner Yates.

“In the middle of the race my front wheel slipped off.

I got back on the bike quickly.

i don't feel so bad

It should still fit.

I've had worse time trials," said the 2019 Tour fourth-placed, who is aiming for a top place in the Giro after being repeatedly thrown back by falls and illness over the past two years.

In the end, he finished 95th with a time of 12:47 minutes.

In the previous year, Buchmann had lost his chances of a top position with a major crash and had to leave the tour early.

Alaphilippe

on the mend

Parallel to the stage, another rider who had fallen reported back: World Champion Julian Alaphilippe, who fell in a pile-up during the classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège, gave his compatriots hope for a start in the Tour de France.

"Everything is going in the right direction," wrote the 29-year-old Frenchman from Team Quick-Step on Instagram on Saturday.

His recovery is progressing, "the pain is slowly easing and I'm breathing much better," said Alaphilippe, who suffered a broken shoulder blade, two broken ribs and a lung injury at the spring classic in Belgium at the end of April.

Actually making it to the Tour de France (from July 1st) will be a race against time.

"The upcoming investigations will decide the rest of the season," wrote Alaphilippe.

At the Giro, the three-day trip to Hungary ends on Sunday with the third stage over 201 kilometers from Kaposvar to Balatonfüred, before the entourage travels to Sicily.

From there we continue on Tuesday – straight up Mount Etna.

The Giro ends after 3410 km on May 29th in Verona.
