The best comes last - is that so?

That's what Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman claim in the Hollywood strip of the same name.

And the prophecy that the last will be first (Matthew 20:16) should hardly be any consolation for the SpVgg Altenerding handball players.

Should they lose this weekend (see report above), they would have played a complete clear round in the Landesliga.

Truly not a glorious newspaper, and this season also needs to be worked up – but not in this column.

This is there to say, first of all: respect that the team pulled through to the end and also took on the 180-kilometer journey to Lauf or Schwabach.

So many football teams didn't make it this year, although they could have done their away trips by bike (or beer bike).

And secondly, dear Altenerdinger handball players, you are not alone in your lack of success.

The handball team from Tus Schutterwald, for example, suffered a series of 21 defeats at the turn of the millennium.

That can't happen to SpVgg - there are only 16 games in the state league.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL and the baseballers of the Louisville Colonels suffered 26 consecutive bankruptcies.

It only gets worse in basketball, where the Philadelphia 76ers lost 28 times, as did SG Braunschweig and BG Karlsruhe.

And then there's boxer Robin Deakin, who started his pro career with a win only to be beaten up 51 times in a row.

Of course, there are also plenty of winless examples from the district: The soccer players from SC Kirchasch 2, for example, only won one of their 24 games in the 2017/18 season, which was better than six years before.

There wasn't a single sense of achievement.

SV Eichenried 2 conceded 132 goals in 25 games. And yet the B-class kickers achieved at least one of their goals for the season back then: They never lost in double digits, which is something.

By the way: Boxer Robin Deakin didn't give up and, after eight and a half dark years, won against Deniss Kornilovs in August 2015.

We're sure: we won't have to wait that long for the Altenerdinger handball team to succeed.

Now let's come to a real winner: Forget Thomas Müller with his ten German championship titles, Georg Brennauer already has 30 now the membership number 62.

Georg Brennauer, a member of FC Bayern since 1960, celebrates his 30th championship title.

At the time, Brennauer was doing his military service in Munich-Oberwiesenfeld with the Luftwaffe when a certain Captain Simon Hasch recruited him for the club.

"He was a junior manager at Bayern," says Brennauer about the times when the club only had 3,000 members and Herbert Weichselbaumer and Charly Peschen, two Bayern players, were in Brennauer's company.

For this reason, and because his brother Heinz was already a FCB member, Schorsch officially became a Red – which was also practical because members from the surrounding area (from a distance of 50 km) were once allowed to stand on the stands free of charge.

But he spared no expense either, he was with FCB at the successful European Cup finals in Nuremberg and Paris.

The team from the 1970s - these are his favorite Bavarians, says Schorsch, "even if the treble in 2013 was the greatest achievement".

He is also correspondingly proud that the heroes of that time – i.e. Franz Beckenbauer, Karlheinz Rummenige and Uli Hoeneß – first honored him for 40 and then for 50 years of membership.

It's been 62 years now, Schorsch is now an honorary member and by no means tired.

On the contrary: as mentioned at the beginning: the best is yet to come.

There are more unsuccessful than Altenerding's handball players
