While Max Verstappen entered the history books as the first winner of the Miami Grand Prix, Mick Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel collided shortly before the end of the race. Both had been in the top ten.

Schumacher and Vettel take it out:

At the top, world champion Max Verstappen was poised to make history as the first Formula 1 race winner in Miami, ultimately unsuccessfully being chased by competitor Charles Leclerc.

Then the drama happened in the back rows: Haas driver Mick Schumacher was on his way to score his first World Championship points in the 26th Formula 1 race, but then there was a collision with Sebastian Vettel in the Aston Martin (lap 54 ).

Vettel retired, Schumacher fell back to the end of the field.

Vettel was ninth, Schumacher tenth.

"Oh dear, but that was my curve," Schumacher radioed.

"It's stupid and bitter for both of us," Vettel said afterwards on Sky: "I'm sorry we're both out.

I thought I had the curve.

When I saw him it was too late." Both said

Ferrari's curse of double poles (the result):

In the last five races in which Ferrari started from places one and two, the Scuderia never managed to finish a double victory.

In Miami, Verstappen in the Red Bull pushed ahead of Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in the second Ferrari.

The world champion thus reduced the gap to Leclerc, who leads the championship standings with 104 points (Verstappen: 85).

The start:

Ferrari last started the race together from the front row in Mexico 2019.

In Miami, this double lead lasted until shortly after the first corner.

Leclerc won the start, but teammate Sainz was conceded by Verstappen on the outside of turn one.

Hamilton also lost places at the start and temporarily fell back to eighth place.

It was even worse for Aston Martin: Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll had to start from the pit lane instead of tenth and 13th.

Aston Martin had previously reported fuel temperature issues.

Hamilton can't get past Bottas for a long time:

He had already won qualifying, and in the race Hamilton was initially unable to overtake his former teammate Valtteri Bottas in the Alfa Romeo.

After restoring sixth place (lap twelve), Hamilton was ten laps behind the Finn, who subsequently ended up between nine and 13 seconds behind Pérez.

It had to be a satisfying situation for Bottas, who drove alongside Hamilton in the Mercedes for five years - and played second fiddle there.

Only at the end of the race (50) did he make a mistake, both Mercedes passed.

And is still under pressure in his own team:

Hamilton's teammate George Russell, who started from twelfth place after a poor qualifying session, stayed out for a long time with old tires and was able to use a safety car phase (41) to get into the pits.

On lap 51 he conceded Hamilton and finished fifth, one place ahead of the seven-time world champion.

Jewelry, climate crisis, pavement:

The Miami Grand Prix was supposed to be a show.

The marina without water, VIP lounges and exorbitant ticket prices left no doubt about that.

But even before the race there was criticism from the drivers.

At first, a ban on jewelry in the cockpit caused frustration.

Then Sebastian Vettel disturbed the show with a T-shirt with which he wanted to draw attention to the rising sea level as a result of climate change.

It featured a helmet with a snorkel under a wavy line and the inscription: "Miami 2060 - 1st Underwater Grand Prix - Act Now or Swim Later."

Immediately before the race, several drivers attested the Miami International Autodrome too little grip off the ideal line.

Verstappen has everything under control:

On the track, the race couldn't keep up with the surroundings.

After Verstappen had overtaken Sainz, the Dutchman then lurked for his chance - and overtook Leclerc at the beginning of the ninth lap.

As a result, Verstappen was able to get some air in a duel with Leclerc.

The first pit stops did not change anything at the top, Verstappen did his laps with a comfortable lead and no wobbles.

A late safety car phase after a collision between Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris caused a bit of tension again, but Verstappen also prevailed at the restart.

"I think I need a drink," he said over the radio after his second win in a row.

Leclerc had instead struggled with the otherwise reliable Ferrari.

»The car is difficult to drive«,
