World championship leader Charles Leclerc has secured pole position for the first Formula 1 race in Miami.

The Ferrari driver from Monaco beat his Spanish team-mate Carlos Sainz in qualifying on Saturday.

Third was world champion Max Verstappen in the Red Bull.

Before the fifth round of the season on Sunday (9.30 p.m. / Sky), Leclerc leads the overall standings by 27 points over Verstappen.

Both have won two races each.

Sebastian Vettel in 13th and Mick Schumacher in 15th were eliminated early in the hunt for a starting place.

Miami – Lewis Hamilton lost the showdown with the German race director for his earrings and piercings for the time being.

Despite fierce objections, the record world champion of Formula 1 in Miami bowed to the instructions of the new rule keeper Niels Wittich and got rid of almost all the jewelry before climbing into the cockpit.

For his nose piercing, which probably has to be professionally removed, the Mercedes superstar received a special permit until the Grand Prix in Monaco at the end of May.

Hamilton had previously resisted the tightened requirements and described them as "very, very stupid".

Race director Wittich had informed the teams in Miami that in future they would have to provide official documents stating that their drivers would not wear jewelry or private, non-fireproof underwear in the car.

The ban has been in the rules for a long time and is intended to ensure more safety.
