The bill to ban violence in sports was approved today (Sunday) by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation.
This means that the police will soon be able to impose administrative fines on rioting fans in football stadiums.
These are fines of NIS 5,000, for fans who are caught throwing torches, rioting or disturbing the order.
This is a move led together by the Ministry of Sports, the Ministry of Homeland Security and the Ministry of Justice.
Subsequently, the law will be submitted to the Knesset for approval, in the hope that such a move will significantly reduce the violence on the sports fields in the country.
The police are supposed to take a very significant part in the course led by the Knesset.
Beyond administrative fines, it will have the authority to keep rioting fans away for longer periods, so as not to create a situation where the courts release the fans for short periods and sometimes only from one football stadium.
Minister of Culture and Sports Hili Trooper: "As we said, eradicating violence in sports has become a top goal on our agenda. We must fight violence in sports with all the tools at our disposal and the approval of the law by the Ministerial Committee is an important step in reducing violence on the courts. "I have no coalition and no opposition. I would like to thank Justice Minister Gideon Saar and Homeland Security Minister Amar Bar-Lev for their mobilization and fruitful cooperation."
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Gideon Saar: "We are working together to eradicate the violence on the sports fields that fatally harms the values of sports.
The plan will lead to a more effective policy, based on fines and removal from the pitches of violent fans.
I also call on the courts to adopt an aggressive policy to eradicate sports violence.
I would like to thank Minister Hili Trooper and Minister Omar Bar-Lev for their cooperation. "
Minister of Internal Security Amar Bar-Lev: "The eradication of violence in sports is a very important task for Israeli society. Sport is part of a culture, and it is not possible for violent elements to come to the pitches to harm the experience, stir and riot. We must increase punishment against these violent elements "The fruitful cooperation on the issue between the Minister of Culture and Sports, the Minister of Justice and me. Sport should be a celebration and cultural experience for young people, adults and families alike, and amending the law banning sports violence - with the steps introduced - is another step towards ensuring this."
