German boxing mourns the loss of Jürgen Blin.

The former European champion died at the age of 79.

Blin became famous for his fight against Muhammad Ali.

Hamburg – mourning in the German boxing world!

Jürgen Blin is dead. The former European boxing champion died on Saturday evening at the age of 79 as a result of kidney disease.

The confirmed son Jörg Blin, who had recently visited his father in the hospital in Reinbek east of Hamburg, the German Press Agency on Sunday.

Blin leaves behind two sons and his partner.

Unforgotten is Blin's fight against Muhammad Ali on Boxing Day 1971, which he lost by knockout in the seventh round at Zurich's Hallenstadion, the first knockout of his career.

"That was the only fight I knew about beforehand: you can't win it," the man from Hamburg later said.

Besides Karl Mildenberger, Blin was the only German who competed against Ali.

Last December, on the 50th anniversary of his fight against Ali, Blin reminisced about seven rounds in the ring with the multiple world champion from the USA.

"Ali was the greatest because he was great as a person, not just in the ring," he told

The master butcher had earned 180,000 marks with the fight and was proud: "Most of them didn't last seven rounds with Ali," said Blin.

Jürgen Blin: Robbed after winning the lottery

Half a year after the fight against Ali, Blin celebrated his greatest success and became European Heavyweight Champion by beating the Spaniard Jose Manuel Urtain.

The son of a milker won 30 of his 48 professional fights. He ended his career in the ring in 1973 after nine years.

Blin worked as a boxing trainer for socially disadvantaged young people in Hamburg-Jenfeld.

In 2020 he won 1.7 million euros in the lottery, but part of it was stolen in a burglary.

He inherited his boxing talent: grandson Joscha Blin tries to follow in his grandfather's footsteps.

The 24-year-old made his professional debut in December 2021.
