When the career as a professional athlete is over, new paths are open.

But the step is difficult, as the words of this skier show.

Collingwood, Ontario - Although Canada is known for its snow, women's winter sport of skiing has been unsuccessful for decades.

Then came Erin Mielzynksi and made history.

In March 2012, the then 21-year-old was the first Canadian to win a World Cup race in 41 years.

She was the fastest runner in the Ofterschwang slalom and ended up at the top of the podium.

It was her only World Cup victory.

Now the 31-year-old has ended her career, following some of her colleagues, such as the Italian Francesca Marsaglia, who for her part put down her skis with a "bang".

Mielynski chose emotional words on her Instagram account in early May.

“The past two months leading up to the announcement have been turbulent and riddled with indecisiveness.

I didn't have much strength after the Olympics and, frankly, it felt like a little bit of torture," she begins her statement.

Skier Erin Mielzynski quits - and it's anything but easy for her

"I wanted to enjoy every race in case it was my last.

But this pleasure confused me further.

One day I wanted to stop, the next I wanted to continue," said Mielzynski about her difficult decision, which was overshadowed by good days and days of doubt.

Ski career over?

Yes - the right words?

no

She asks herself whether she still has "unfinished business", whether she has not yet reached the end of her goals and answers the question with "yes".

She will also "miss the many aspects of competition," and wonders if it's the right time?

"No," she writes, ending the paragraph: "Can I find the right words to explain my decision?

no

Maybe one day."

She struggled with the decision, which is probably the hardest step for almost every professional athlete.

"Right now, I know I feel okay.

I'm healthy, happy and excited," wrote Mielzynski, who went on to say that when she sees a photo of her team, she wants to come back.

“It is a time of change.

I have been in this situation and will be in it again.

We all do.

It's inevitable.

Everything I've experienced so far has prepared me for what's next.”

In the biathlon, too, there have already been some final strokes.

Among others, the German Maren Hammerschmidt has resigned.
