FIFA announced on Wednesday that it would open disciplinary proceedings to examine the potential ineligibility of Byron Castill

Will Ecuador participate in its 4th final phase of the World Cup at the end of the year in Qatar?

Nothing is certain.

This Wednesday, FIFA announced that it had decided to open disciplinary proceedings against Byron Castillo, the right-back of the Ecuadorian selection.

This decision follows a complaint filed by the Chilean Federation which considers that Castillo is of Colombian nationality and not Ecuadorian.

“The Chilean Football Federation has filed a complaint with the FIFA Disciplinary Committee regarding the possible falsification of documents granting Ecuadorian nationality to the player Byron David Castillo Segura, as well as his possible ineligibility for the eight matches he has played. disputed with the Ecuadorian team within the framework of the preliminary competition of the FIFA World Cup”, writes the international body in a press release.

Last week, the Chilean federation explained the reasons for its complaint in a press release.

“There is ample evidence that the player was born in Colombia, in the city of Tumaco, on July 25, 1995, and not on November 10, 1998, in the Ecuadorian city of Playas.

Chile adds that the investigations carried out in Ecuador report “inconsistencies in the birth certificate.

Peru, who finished fifth in qualifying for the Amsud zone, could be the first beneficiary of possible sanctions against Ecuador.

For the moment, the Peruvians must play a play-off on June 13 against the winner of the match Australia - United Arab Emirates to hope to qualify for the World Cup.

If successful, they would be placed in Group D, that of France, and would face the Blues on November 22 in the first match at Al-Janoub Stadium before playing against Tunisia and then Denmark.

However, a possible disqualification of Ecuador could send them directly to Qatar but not to Group D. The Peruvians would then be placed in Group A with Qatar, the Netherlands and Senegal.

Their place in the play-off would normally go to Colombia, 6th in the playoffs in the Amsud zone, which would then become a possible opponent of the Blues depending on the result of the play-offs.

Chile, the source of the complaint, for its part finished 7th.
