Mallorca resists against Sevilla

2022-05-11T21:49:01.107Z

The Andalusian team fails to close their qualification for the Champions League against a very defensive rival who achieved a draw that leaves them with some salvation options

Direct Chronicle

Manolo Reina's save in the 97th minute against a great shot by En-Nesyri ended Sevilla's hopes of achieving a victory that would allow them to secure qualification for the Champions League.

Julen Lopetegui's team tried in every possible way, but they couldn't open the lock on a Mallorca that worked their asses off to obtain a draw that allows them to have certain salvation options.

Sevilla have been left without a goal and although they cannot be blamed for their dedication, they are a team that has missed football.

Sevilla needs a point in the last two days (Atlético and Athletic) to ensure their place in the Champions League, while Mallorca, two points behind Cádiz and in relegation places, yearns for a defeat for the Cadiz team in Anoeta .

Sevilla wanted, but could not.

His decline in the second round is evident even though injuries have affected the performance of a team that came to aspire to the League at times.

Now, Sevilla feel the encouragement of a Betis that has been placed to five points when there are six left to play.

The eternal Sevillian rivalry has risen this year to the fight for the Champions League.

An atmosphere of drama surrounded the Sánchez Pizjuán match.

Especially for Mallorca, completely on the wire after Granada's triumph against Athletic.

Three points from safety, they were chasing victory against a Sevilla team that also needed to win to secure the Champions League.

Javier Aguirre searched for the three points with drastic decisions.

For example, changing the goalkeeper and placing Manolo Reina by Sergio Rico.

Also opting for a defense of three central defenders and a very defensive approach with Battaglia as the pivot ahead.

Mallorca hung on its crossbar and Sevilla is not up for many jogs.

Lopetegui also moved pieces.

He thought that Papu, acting with more freedom, was going to give the team some play, helped by Lamela.

It was not so.

Only then, hanging balls, did he have a clear chance in the 10th minute. Salva Sevilla avoided Mir's goal under the sticks.

The Sevilla striker, who was returning to the starting line-up, had finished off with his foot at the exit of a corner kick.

A sample of the defensive weakness of the Balearic team.

Not by piling up defenders does he defend himself better.

Sevilla's football blindness allowed Mallorca to live with some comfort.

Even Bono had to act against Battaglia after the Argentine robbed his compatriot Papu.

Thick and without depth, Sevilla, with 73% possession, could not with the defensive Mallorca.

Lopetegui's men tried in every way to score the goal in the second half.

Through the center, on the wings and with hanging balls, Sevilla tried to subdue a Mallorca team that was carrying out a tremendous resistance exercise.

Curiously, the only dangerous action until the final stretch was from Mallorca, with a shot by Muriqi that was saved, as always, by Bono.

Sevilla subjected the rival to a siege in the final stretch.

Maffeo made a great save against Martial, who was covered by Reina at the last minute.

Papu tried again and again, leading his team and throwing balls to some pretty bad strikers in the auction.

Delaney was about to score in the 93rd minute after a precise pass from Papu, vital in a cross after a visiting counterattack.

The match experienced moments of great emotion until the chilling save of the veteran Reina arrived.

It was the 97th minute and the goalkeeper, who played as a starter six months later, kept alive the hopes of salvation for a team that gave everything to hold out in Nervión.

Sevilla, without ideas but with a lot of dedication, did not achieve the objective of victory.

The second round of Lopetegui's team invites reflection.
