Endurance ace Sandra Morawitz from Hallbergmoos celebrated great success at the Duathlon World Championships in Denmark.
The competition was tough though.
Viborg/Hallbergmoos
- She is an exceptional athlete and is full of energy: Sandra Morawitz started at the Duathlon World Championships in Viborg on Saturday in her age group of 45 to 49 year olds over the middle distance - and she came back from Denmark with bronze in her luggage.
A huge success for the Hallbergmooser, who only celebrated a great success at the end of April with the Bavarian championship title.
After arriving in Viborg, Morawitz initially struggled with minor technical problems on the bike.
But luckily she found a nice bike mechanic who helped her - so in principle nothing stood in the way of a successful competition.
With sunshine but strong winds, things got down to business on Saturday.
The athletes were hit by a strong headwind
The running course was tough: the first three and a half laps of the ten-kilometre distance led through downtown Viborg – up and down, partly over coarse cobblestones.
After that, 60 kilometers on the bike had to be mastered in a strong headwind in the first part of the route to the west.
The aim was to complete two laps with a wavy profile, but also sections over cobblestones.
(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)
At first, Sandra Morawitz could hardly believe it
The route in windy conditions demanded a lot from Morawitz and the other athletes, which was noticeable in the legs during the final ten-kilometer run.
In front of the Hallbergmooser was a Dane with a lead of 50 seconds, just behind her was a Brit.
Thanks to her husband Tom, who cheered for her at the side of the track and informed her about the gaps to her competitors, she gave everything to avoid being caught by the Brit.
When she finished completely knocked out after exactly 3:30.22 hours, she couldn't believe that she had made third place in her age group despite the strong starting field.
In the end only two Danes were faster, the Brit was fourth.
