The basketball team from TSV Weilheim won their home game against BC Hellenen Munich.

Two youngsters were also given time to play - and showed their potential.

Weilheim – A glimpse into the possible future of the Weilheim basketball team was revealed in the home game of the 2nd regional league south against BC Hellenen Munich.

With Philip Merkl, who has already earned a regular place this season, and debutant Anian Culum, there were two very young guys on the field at times.

They showed that they can also stand their ground in this league.

"We need the young people and I hope they stay with us," said Weilheim coach Darryl Millwood, who attested to the youngsters' good performance.

On the other hand, he was ambivalent about the overall appearance of his men against the Greeks.

"We've had good times and bad times," Millwood said.

After the better ones prevailed and his team convinced in the final sprint, the bottom line was a 67:55 (25:31) home win against the table eleventh.

Weilheim vs. BC Hellenen with good and bad phases

The Weilheimer had to do without their veteran Miljan Grujic and Alex Thumser played with a damaged finger.

The home side initially found it difficult to get into the game.

In the first quarter they were quickly behind, as the Hellenes were particularly successful with long-distance throws.

The TSV men got off to a good start in the second quarter.

After a 6-0 series, they had closed the gap to 21:22 (13th).

After that, the Weilheimer reported almost completely on the offensive until the change of sides.

Missed throws and ball losses in a row let them fall behind again until half-time.

Negligence crept into the game of the home side in the third quarter as well.

Thanks to a relatively good defensive work, they stayed close to the Munich team.

At the end of the round, Millwood ordered almost all the veterans to the bench.

The rejuvenated quintet around Merkl and Culum, the son of Weilheim's basketball legend Goran Culum, put up a good fight and reduced the deficit, even if the 18-year-old missed the basket with a few shots from distance.

"I still have to do a few extra sessions with him," joked Culum senior, who followed his son's performance closely.

In the final quarter, however, the Weilheimer really turned up the heat.

Led by Raphael Sedlmayr, who managed to win three three-pointers with ease, the hosts started a race to catch up, which the Hellenes had nothing to oppose.

"Maybe they were running out of power, too," suggested Millwood.

His men were bombproof in defence, got almost every rebound and knew how to convert their chances on the offensive.

That quickly brought the 46:46 equalizer (31st).

The subsequent leadership grew in the episode more and more.
