The two national teams from Austria and France replace the teams from Russia and Belarus, which are excluded from the ice hockey federation.

The Austrian national team represents the Austrian Ice Hockey Association at international level and has been a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation since 1912.

After the 2021 Ice Hockey World Championships, the team was in 17th place in the world rankings. Austria is one of eight teams in Group B, whose preliminary round games will be played in the Nokia Arena in Tampere.

There the Austrians meet the national teams from Finland, Great Britain, Latvia, Norway, Sweden, the Czech Republic and the USA.

Group A preliminary round matches will be held at Helsingin Jäähalli in Helsinki.

The team will be coached at the 2022 Ice Hockey World Championships by coach Roger Bader and his assistant coaches.

The head coach is Swiss by birth and took over the team in 2016.

The Austrian national team: about successes and defeats

Austria's national team can look back on 13 participations in the Olympic Games and 62 World Championships.

The ice hockey team achieved its best Olympic placement with sixth place in 1928. Austria was able to secure a bronze medal at the World Championships in 1931 and 1947.

There are also two European championship titles from 1927 and 1931. The team's history has always been marked by successes and defeats, promotions to the top division alternated with relegations to Division 1A.

For the 2022 Ice Hockey World Championships from May 13th to May 29th, 2022, the team will travel to the next round.

The teams from Russia and Belarus had previously been banned from participating by the International Ice Hockey Federation due to the war in Ukraine.

They are now represented by the two national teams from Austria and France.
