The Asian Confederation announced today that China has apologized for hosting the 2023 AFC Asian Cup due to the repercussions of the Corona virus pandemic.
"After extensive consultations with the Chinese Football Association, the latter informed the Asian Football Confederation of its inability to host the 2023 AFC Asian Cup," the federation said in a statement, noting that it would announce in due course the next steps related to hosting the finals.
The federation stated, "It took into account the exceptional circumstances caused by the Covid 19 pandemic, which led to China waiving the hosting rights," indicating that it had enough time to assess the situation regarding hosting the cup.
China was chosen to host the 2023 Asian Cup finals in June 2019 and the tournament was scheduled to be held in 10 Chinese cities during the period from June 16 to July 16, 2023.
