Germany started the Ice Hockey World Championships in Finland with a defeat.

On Friday, defending champion Canada was too strong for the team of national coach Toni Söderholm at 3: 5 (0: 2, 1: 3, 2: 0).

Marc Michaelis from the Toronto Marlies from the second-class North American professional league AHL (28th minute), Mannheim's Matthias Plachta (42nd) and NHL defender Moritz Seider from the Detroit Red Wings (53rd) scored against the NHL stars.

Pierre-Luc Dubois (18th/32nd) from the Winnipeg Jets, Cole Sillinger (9th) and Kent Johnson (34th/both Columbus Blue Jackets) and Noah Gregor (38th) from the San Jose were twice for the record world champion Shark's successful.

So Söderholm experienced a bad start at the World Championships in its home country, even if the impression was significantly better than three months ago at the Olympics, when the team also started the tournament with a defeat.

Unlike in Beijing, Germany got into the game properly this time against ice hockey motherland Canada.

At the Olympics, three quick goals and the injury of leading player Marco Nowak after an unpunished check sealed the defeat early on and set the course for the disappointing course of the tournament.

This time Germany fought back physically and kept up well at times.

The underdog did not survive the first ten minutes without conceding a goal.

The only 18-year-old exceptional talent Sillinger overcame goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer when the German defense did not bring the puck out of their own third.

The 0:2 by Dubois almost looked like a copy, again the Olympic tenth could not clear.

»The last third gave us a push«

As a result, the DEB team improved, was clearly superior at the beginning of the middle section and was rewarded with the goal.

However, penalties brought the favorite back.

In the majority, Canada played the playful and running superiority.

However, Germany didn't give up in the final third and improved the result thanks to goals from Plachta (42') and Seider (53').

In particular, the double strike by Dubois and Johnson in the second third annoyed coach Söderholm.

"We conceded two goals with a man down, so we have to and will improve," said the Finn and looked ahead positively: "The last third gave us a push."

This will also be necessary, because Germany is already challenged again in the second game in Group A against Slovakia on Saturday (7.20 p.m., TV: Sport1 and MagentaSport).

The Olympic bronze medalist defeated France 4:2 with some difficulty at the start on Friday.

The French replace the Russian selection in the 85th title fights because of the war of aggression against Ukraine.

In Beijing, Germany, who had traveled there with gold ambitions, missed the round of eight with a 4-0 loss to Slovakia.
