For Lennard Kämna, the dream of the pink jersey at the Giro d'Italia has burst.
The previous overall second, who triumphed on Etna last Tuesday, had to give up on the 13.6-kilometer final climb with an average gradient of 8.4 percent and lost more than four minutes.
The Spaniard Juan Pedro López defended the pink jersey.
Things went better for Emanuel Buchmann.
The former Tour de France fourth was temporarily left behind on Sunday at the difficult mountain finish on the ninth stage over 191 kilometers up to the blockhouse, but fought back and held the loss 16 seconds behind his victorious Bora-hansgrohe team-mate Jai Hindley in Limits.
With his victory in front of the Frenchman Romain Bardet and ex-Giro champion Richard Carapaz, the Australian gave the Bora team its second victory of the day in the Tour of Italy.
With his seventh place, Buchmann jumped up to ninth place overall.
1:09 minutes behind Lopez.
In the meantime, a preliminary decision has been made on the captain's question at Bora.
After the Dutchman Wilco Kelderman lost a lot of time, everything is now focused on Hindley and Buchmann.
Last year Buchmann was within striking distance of the leaders before he retired after a fall while in sixth place.
On Monday, the Tour of Italy will have its second rest day before the tenth stage follows over 196 kilometers from Pescara to Jesi over undulating terrain.
