rise!
SV Werder Bremen is back!
Thanks to a 2-0 (1-0) home win in the season finale against Jahn Regensburg, coach Ole Werner's team has made the direct return to the Bundesliga perfect!
Bremen - done!
After just one year in the
second division and a turbulent season,
SV Werder Bremen is back in the first division.
Coach Ole Werner's team eliminated the last doubts about
promotion
with a deserved but hard-fought 2-0 (1-0) home win against
Jahn Regensburg
.
The self-proclaimed "ugly birds"
Niclas Füllkrug
(10th) and
Marvin Ducksch
(51.) put the hosts on the road to victory and caused a huge party in the Wohninvest Weser Stadium.
It had already started in the morning with a fan march with over 12,000 participants at Bremen's market square.
The mood among the green and whites had not been so exuberant for years.
The fans immediately stormed onto the pitch, unbelievable scenes played out.
The second division title was missed, however, and FC Schalke 04 grabbed it (2-1 win in Nuremberg).
Hamburger SV (3-2 win in Rostock) saved themselves in the relegation.
Darmstadt (3-0 win against Paderborn) was only the thankless fourth place.
Werder coach Ole Werner dared to do it – and
backed Ömer Toprak
in defence , who dropped out a week ago in the 3-0 win in Aue due to renewed calf problems.
"He is perhaps our most important player," said Werner, explaining his decision.
Otherwise, the professionals who were expected to do so were allowed to start.
Opponent
Jahn Regensburg
was plagued by a goalkeeping problem.
First-choice keeper Alexander Meyer is injured, substitute Thorsten Kirschbaum is sick – and so Alexander Weidinger was between the posts.
He usually does that in the 5th league with the second team of Regensburg.
Huge celebrations at SV Werder Bremen: promotion against Jahn Regensburg
Apparently
Werder Bremen
wanted to take advantage of this immediately.
Driven by the euphoric fans, the hosts went full throttle – and after just six minutes the ball was actually wriggling in the net.
But goalscorer Mitchell Weiser was just offside.
But that didn't matter a little later, because
Niclas Füllkrug
had completed a great combination via Romano Schmid and
Marvin Ducksch
with a powerful shot to make it 1-0 (10th).
Keeper Weidinger didn't seem completely without a chance.
Nevertheless, of course, there was huge cheering on the pitch and in the ranks, because Werder was already on the road to promotion.
But things didn't go quite smoothly.
Weiser actually wanted to clear a cross past the goal, but forced his keeper Jiri Pavlenka to make a brilliant save (23').
A shocking moment in the
Wohninvest Weser Stadium,
which was completely sold out with 42,100 spectators .
Then Nicklas Shipnoski (35') and Andreas Albers (37') made the Werder fans' hearts sink with their long-range shots, but they just missed.
Werder Bremen promotion perfect: Marvin Ducksch and Niclas Füllkrug make the Weser Stadium tremble
Bremen, who had slacked off significantly in the course of the first half and managed the game too much, were far from through.
In addition, Darmstadt was breathing down their necks, having already led 3-0 against Paderborn at the break.
Hamburger SV, on the other hand, was 0-1 behind at Hansa Rostock.
Werder Bremen
didn't do any better after the change and even swam at the back for a short time.
But Shipnoski (46th) and Carlo Boukhalfa (47th) could not use that.
Bremen made it 2-0 at just the right time: Ducksch scored (50') after fine preparatory work by Schmid.
The video assistant briefly checked whether Schmid had gotten the ball on his arm, but found no criminal offense.
The goal counted and the
Weser
Stadium trembled.
Promotion perfect: Werder Bremen beats Jahn Regensburg, well deserved
The strong Schmid finished work shortly afterwards, he cleared the field for Niklas Schmidt.
And
Werder Bremen
pushed for the 3-0, which Füllkrug (59'), Milos Veljkovic (60') and Schmidt (67') just missed.
"Never again 2. Liga", chanted the fans and had to watch how Leonardo Bittencourt put the ball on the outside of the post (69').
And because Regensburg didn't give up, it was still exciting.
Also for keeper Pavlenka, who was challenged again.
Werner reacted, brought on Nicolai Rapp for Bittencourt and wanted to strengthen the defense (79').
Shortly before the end, Felix Agu (for Weiser) and Ilia Gruev (for Christian Groß) were also able to celebrate the promotion on the field.
Toprak, who actually held out, used the short break to goad the
SV Werder Bremen
fans with wild hand movements .
It was no longer necessary, the atmosphere was already outstanding.
When the final whistle blew, the fans immediately stormed onto the pitch.
