Tennis: no Roland-Garros for Gaël Monfils

2022-05-16T14:14:04.742Z

The French n°1, who also withdrew from the Lyon tournament this week, suffers from the right heel and will have to undergo a small intervention

A few days ago, Gaël Monfils confided to us his pleasure in tackling his 16th Roland-Garros, his pride in having missed only two since the start of his career (knee in 2012 and illness in 2016) and his desire to play 20 before the end of his career.

The Parisian, 35, will therefore have to stretch it at least until 2027!

The French No. 1 has indeed announced on social networks his package for the Grand Slam tricolor, whose qualifications began on Monday May 16 (the final table opens on Sunday May 20).

“I regret to announce my withdrawal from Open Parc de Lyon and Roland Garros next week posted number 22 at ATP.

I've been hampered since Monte-Carlo

(Editor's note: where he retired just before the start of the tournament)

by a heel spur in my right heel which prevents me from moving on the court.

So I made the decision to make a small intervention to deal with the problem so that I could resume the tournaments as soon as possible.

I will let you know my recovery date as soon as possible.

A blow for the Blues, whose horizon already seemed very gray this year.

Even entering the tournament short of form and rhythm, Monfils was often able to transcend himself and thrill the public in one of the events that is closest to his heart (a semi-final, three quarter-finals ).

The Habs will be able to take advantage of his unavailability to watch over his Ukrainian wife Elina Svitolina, who has put her career on hold for a few weeks.

The couple has just announced that they are expecting a happy event (a little girl) for the month of October.
