In the summer of 2022, Königsplatz in Munich will be transformed into the venue for the Beach Volleyball Championships.

The European Championships are all about medals.

Munich – In August 2022, the second European Championships 2022 will be held in the Bavarian capital.

Beach volleyball is one of the nine sports that will hold their European championship in this context.

The CEV – the European Volleyball Federation – is responsible for organizing the beach volleyball tournament.

Beach Volleyball at the European Championships: General

The last European Beach Volleyball Championships in Germany took place in Berlin in 2010.

Now, after twelve years, the sports event is returning to German soil as part of the European Championships.

This time, the best European beach volleyball players will fight for a coveted place on the podium in the south of the country.

The rules of the game are the same for both sexes.

A team wins a set if it scores 21 points first.

If the score is 20-20, play continues until a team with a two-point lead decides the win.

In order to emerge as the winning team in a match, two sets must be won.

If there is a tie after the first two sets, a final third set of up to 15 points decides the outcome of the game.

Beach Volleyball at the European Championships: Teams and Stars

A beach volleyball team consists of two players.

A total of 128 athletes come to Munich for the European Championships.

Both men and women form 32 teams.

These 32 are in turn divided into eight groups of four.

The teams that finish fourth in the group ranking after two games are eliminated.

The best in the group qualify directly for the round of 16.

Second and third place finishers advance to the knockout stages of the round of 16.

The round of 16 is followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and finally the final.

Germany is one of the most successful nations in beach volleyball.

In 2016, Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst won Olympic gold in Rio.

Karla Borger and Julia Sude won the bronze medal at the European Championships in 2021 and will be part of the national squad again in 2022.

Another star of beach volleyball is Clemens Wickler.

He is also Vice World Champion 2019 and multiple German Champion.

Which duos will actually compete at the European Championships in August has not yet been finally determined (as of 04/2022).

The decision will be made with a focus on qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games.

In addition to the top German athletes, the men's team consisting of Anders Mol and Christian Sørum from Norway is the clear favorite for the title.

The two have won the European Championship four times in a row.
