Bayern icon Franz Beckenbauer has withdrawn from the public eye.

As Rudi Völler now explains, the native of Munich is not doing well.

Munich/Kitzbühel - The shining light of German football, an icon of FC Bayern, the "Kaiser" of the Bundesliga: the superlatives about Franz Beckenbauer are omnipresent.

Til today.

And that despite the fact that the world champion coach from 1990 has largely withdrawn from the public eye in recent years.

FC Bayern Munich: New worries about Franz Beckenbauer

In 2019, the 76-year-old had to undergo an eye operation.

He had already had heart surgery in 2016 and 2017.

Rare photos from the Allianz Arena in Munich showed him very slim and gaunt in May 2020 and March 2021.

Now there are apparently new concerns about Franz Beckenbauer.

Specifically: Rudi Völler told

Sky

at the weekend that the "Kaiser" could not come to Leverkusen (2-1 against Freiburg) to say goodbye as Bayer boss on Saturday.

“I was also in contact with Franz.

Of course he would have liked to come.

Unfortunately, he's not doing so well," Völler explained in the interview: "Lothar (

Matthäus, ed.

), I and Andi Brehme are in contact with him.

We promised him that we would visit him in the next few weeks.” All four were world champions together with the DFB team in Italy in 1990.

Of course he would have liked to come.

Unfortunately he is not doing so well.

Franz Beckenbauer: FC Bayern icon lives in Salzburg - not in Munich

At least since last year it has been quiet about the "Kaiser".

Beckenbauer now lives in Salzburg after years of living in the Alpine idyll near Kitzbühel in Tyrol.

When he was part of a small Munich delegation at FC Bayern's home game against Eintracht Frankfurt during the corona pandemic in May 2020, Beckenbauer told

: "Kalle (

Rummenigge, ed

.) called me and invited me.

After a long time I leave the home environment again.

I will enjoy the ghost game and fully concentrate on the action on the pitch.

Otherwise I'm always asked: 'Franz, how did you see that?'

I like it much more to watch football without having to talk a lot.”

A few months later, shortly before his 75th birthday, he told the same newspaper that he was doing “according to the circumstances”.

"With all the operations and also with the history of 2006. That really affected me," he said at the time, referring to the allegations surrounding the 2006 World Cup.

FC Bayern: Franz Beckenbauer is honored for his life's work

Beckenbauer was the organizer of the tournament, and there are said to have been inconsistencies in the awarding of the tournament.

"I can see that it is now accepted that there was nothing, but the last few years have been tough," said the "Kaiser" in September 2020. He would like "more peace now".

Franz Beckenbauer: The FC Bayern icon has had health problems for years

And he even spoke about his possible demise.

“Now, on the 75th, it's the first time I'm starting to think.

75 is an age when you can guess the end,” said FC Bayern icon Beckenbauer at the time.

He hopes that “God will give him many more years.

You become aware of finiteness.

And of course that bothers you."

Once again, the view from football Germany is now towards the Austrian border and Salzburg.

Actually, on Thursday (May 19) Beckenbauer was to be honored for his life's work by the German Football Ambassadors' Association at the Foreign Office.

Völler did not explain exactly what health problems he was suffering from.

Apparently he couldn't travel to Leverkusen.
