The playful European Cup entry through the last nine games without a win cost coach Sebastian Hoeneß his job at the Bundesliga soccer club TSG Hoffenheim.
Although sports director Alexander Rosen only expressed his confidence in his coach at the end of April, the 40-year-old had to leave a few days after the botched season finale at Borussia Mönchengladbach (1: 5).
According to both sides, the separation was "amicable".
The Kraichgauer ended the season in ninth place.
In the last three games, TSG Hoffenheim suffered three defeats with a total of 13 goals conceded.
Dismissal surprising despite bad phase
The dismissal of Hoeneß, whose contract actually ran until June 2023, came as a surprise despite the recent downturn.
At the end of April, Rosen had explained that Hoeneß was firmly in the saddle at the club of majority owner Dietmar Hopp.
"No - and I seriously wonder how you came up with this thesis in the first place," Rosen had answered in the "kicker" when asked whether there were any remaining doubts about Hoeneß.
After Adi Hütter (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Markus Weinzierl (FC Augsburg) and Florian Kohfeldt (VfL Wolfsburg), Hoeneß is the fourth coach to leave or have to leave at the end of the season.
