For the first time ever, FIFA has appointed three female referees and three female assistant referees for the World Cup to be held this coming winter in Qatar. And Michael Oliver.
The appointment of six referees to the World Cup is a significant milestone in the history of the world of football, as for the first time the referees have the opportunity to take part in the Men's World Cup finals after 92 years of competition.
The judges selected are Stephanie Farpert from France, Salima Mokensanga from Rwanda and Yoshimi Yamashita from Japan.
Moreover, the assistant judges are Noiza Beck from Brazil, Karen Diaz Medina from Mexico and Catherine Nesbit from the USA.
It should be noted that not all referee teams and assistants in the World Cup are guaranteed to referee a game and much depends on their performance ahead of the tournament which will start on November 21st.
Regarding the decision, the chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, Pierluigi Kolina, said: “The decision ends a long process that began several years ago with the deployment of referees in FIFA tournaments for young and mature men.
"This is how we clearly emphasize that quality is what matters to us, not gender."

The former Italian referee added: "I hope that in the future, selecting senior officials in women's games for important men's competitions will be perceived as something normal and not as sensational. They deserve to be in the World Cup because they are constantly functioning at a high level and that is important for us."
