Schalke's Simon Terodde scored 30 goals in 30 games last season.

He played himself into the focus of national coach Hansi Flick.

Gelsenkirchen - On Thursday, national coach Hansi Flick announced his squad for the four upcoming international matches in June.

Except for a change in the goalkeepers - Oliver Baumann moves into the squad for the resting Marc-André ter Stegen - there was no major change.

Nevertheless, it cannot be ruled out that Flick will appoint a surprise candidate for the next nomination.

Most recently, second division top scorer Simon Terodde drew attention to himself with many goals, which by no means passed the national coach.

The FC Schalke 04 attacker scored 30 goals in 30 second division games and thus played a large part in his team's direct promotion back to the Bundesliga.

During the press round the announcement of the current squad for the next Nations League games was approached Flick facing a possible squad place for Terodde on the 34-year-olds.

"Simon Terodde is a striker who scores a lot of goals - now in the second division," Flick noted diplomatically.

However, the 57-year-old gave the Schalke pro a minimal chance of going to the World Cup in Qatar in November.

"We'll now see how it looks next season, whether he can score goals in the first division," said Flick about the most successful goalscorer in second division history with 172 goals.

"If he plays at a top level - that's the Bundesliga - and performs well there and scores his goals, all doors and gates are open."

DFB-Team: National team for Schalke striker Simon Terodde "a big dream"

The former FC Bayern coach also emphasized that it was “outstanding how Terodde has scored goals in recent years.

He's got a good rate."

Apparently, Terodde is part of Flick's extended group of candidates for a World Cup squad.

As the national coach also noted, the same applies to Schalke as to the other potential World Cup drivers.

The discussion about a late national team debut of the veteran got rolling because of some statements from an interview.

“Of course, the national team is a big dream.

For which footballer not?” Terodde had said to Sport1.

"If Hansi Flick really decides in the end that he needs a striker for Qatar who is up front and scores goals, and then he thinks of me, then of course I'm ready," he added confidently.

At the moment, however, he is “not thinking too much about it”.
