British professional cyclist Simon Yates (BikeExchange-Jayco) has won the eventful 14th stage of the Giro d'Italia.
The 2018 Vuelta winner broke away from a small breakaway group that included Olympic gold medalist Richard Carapaz on the final climb.
The Ecuadorian from the Ineos Grenadiers team finished third in Turin and took over the pink jersey of the overall leader.
As the best German, Emanuel Buchmann reached the finish of the demanding stage over 147 km starting in Santena, 1:10 minutes behind Yates in ninth place, on which the riders had to overcome around 3200 meters in altitude.
Buchmann improved to seventh place overall, 1:58 minutes separating him from Carapaz.
Buchmann's Bora-hansgrohe teammate Jai Hindley is even closer: the Australian finished second on the day and is only seven seconds behind the new wearer of the pink jersey.
The Bora drivers Lennard Kämna and Ben Zwiehoff also looked for their chance in attacks.
The teams of the favorites held against it and the pace was high.
The most prominent victim was Juan Pedro Lopez: The Spaniard from the Trek-Segafredo team had to be torn down early and lost the pink jersey after ten days.
Dumoulin has to give up
Previously, the 105th Giro d'Italia had lost another top rider.
Team Jumbo-Visma's Tom Dumoulin, who won the second largest national cycling tour in 2017, retired during the stage.
The Dutchman had already fallen far behind in the overall classification in the first Giro week on Mount Etna, on Saturday he got into trouble early on on the way to Turin and got out.
On Sunday, the decisive phase of the Tour of Italy, which ends in Verona on May 29, will be heralded with the first of five difficult high mountain stages.
