Wimbledon organizers reacted today (Saturday) following the cancellation of the Grand Slam rankings that were denied by the ATP, WTA and ITF after Russian and Belarusian players were not allowed to take part in this year's tournament due to the invasion of Ukraine.
A statement from Wimbledon said: "We are divided over our decision to postpone the entry of Russian and Belarusian players into this year's championship, and we are very sorry for the impact of this decision on the injured.
However, given the UK Government's stance on limiting Russia's global influence and the widespread reactions we have received, we remain of the opinion that we did the right thing, to keep Wimbledon as a world - renowned sporting event and British institution and stand behind the decision we made.
Therefore, we would like to express our deep disappointment with the decisions made by the ATP, WTA and ITF in removing ranking points for the championship. "
The Wimbledon tournament kicks off on June 27 and it remains to be seen how much the final decisions made will affect the event, after many players from the round, expressed their opposition to the non-entry of Russian and Belarusian players and without points they might also prefer to give up their performance this year.
