Formula 1 expert Marc Surer assumes that Sebastian Vettel will drive his last season in the premier class.

In the tz.de interview, he reveals why.

Munich – Is Sebastian Vettel already on his farewell tour?

It is still unclear whether the Hessian will extend his contract, which expires at the end of the season, and remain in Formula 1.

Aston Martin would like to extend with the four-time world champion, Vettel himself is mostly thoughtful, but not very specific about his future.

tz.de

asked an expert: Marc Surer is one of the best-known Formula 1 experts in German-speaking countries.

We spoke to the ex-Swiss driver before the Spanish Grand Prix on the Circuit de Catalunya (the race in the live ticker) about the future of Sebastian Vettel, Mick Schumacher's messed-up start to the season and the exciting world championship fight.

Formula 1: Marc Surer criticizes Aston Martin - "I don't understand"

Mr. Surer, Ralf Schumacher predicts a "disastrous weekend" for Sebastian Vettel in Barcelona.

Do you share the gloomy forecast?

Marc Surer:

Barcelona is a track where the car plays a more crucial role than the driver.

Aston Martin has made little progress lately, we'll see.

The fact is: the car is too slow.

Aston Martin will therefore start with a large update package in Barcelona.

Teammate Lance Stroll, son of the team owner, will probably get this update one race earlier.

Isn't that unfair?

Surer:

At the moment they are so far behind that it almost doesn't matter who gets the updates first.

But one thing is clear to me: if you have a four-time world champion on your team, he has to be the first to get the upgrades.

I don't understand this approach.

As a Sky co-commentator, Marc Surer did not miss a Formula 1 race for 21 years.

Formula 1: Does Vettel end?

"See no reason to continue"

How long will Vettel do this?

It must be incredibly frustrating for him not to have a competitive car again.

Surer:

He's earned enough money, there's no shortage of it.

It speaks for him that he is still driving the season and fulfilling his contract.

I would have also thought it possible that he would give up after the first two races.

I see no reason for him to continue after the season.

I wouldn't understand if he didn't stop.

He will no longer get an offer from a top team.

Mick Schumacher also experienced a disappointing start to the season.

Now that the Haas is able to score points, he keeps making mistakes.

How does he get out of this negative spiral?

Surer:

At least his pace is now on par with Magnussen.

This is important.

But he has to stop throwing the car away.

He is to blame for the Vettel crash in Miami, because he simply misjudged it.

How much longer does he have before things get tight for him?

Surer:

He still has to get the car under control this year.

That's for sure.

But he is a driver who learns quickly.

I always like to compare him to Niki Lauda, who also had to work everything out for himself.

Formula 1: Expert Surer does not write off Mercedes – "Will still win races this year"

They doubt that Mick will become world champion one day.

Why?

Surer:

Formula 1 currently has so many super talents - and they are all in his generation.

There are drivers like Russell, Norris, Leclerc and Verstappen.

You just know that they're going to be world champions one day.

Mick will be a good driver.

He can do a lot with his intelligence, but then everything has to fit and he has to be in the best car.

Lewis Hamilton sat in the best car for years.

Now he's following.

Is the season already over for Mercedes?

Surer:

No.

If I had to bet I'd say they're still winning races this year.

The car's potential was already shown in Miami, they just have to unleash it.

You know how to do it.

They've improved tremendously over the last year.

Hamilton has already given away the world title.

Who will be world champion?

Surer:

Luckily I am a commentator and not a prophet.

But I think Max Verstappen has a small advantage over Leclerc.

Ferrari got off to a great start, they put in a car that can be used on any track.

But now you have to wait for the upgrades, Red Bull has already caught up.

From the middle of the season we know who really has the better car, Silverstone is always a good indicator.

Marc Surer drove 82 races in Formula 1 between 1979 and 1986. For 21 years (from 1996 to 2017) he commented on every race for the pay-TV channel Sky (then DF1/Premiere).
