The German national ice hockey team had a harder time than expected against the Kazakhs, who had not won before, but won again. After the success, the DEB selection could now create history against Switzerland.

After the fifth win in a row, the German national ice hockey team is fighting for group victory at the World Cup in Finland in a showdown against Switzerland at the end of the preliminary round.

The team of national coach Toni Söderholm, which already qualified early for the knockout round, defeated bottom-placed Kazakhstan 5-4 (3-2, 1-1, 1-1) in Helsinki with a lot of effort.

In the last preliminary round game on Tuesday (11.20 a.m., TV: Sport1 and MagentaSport), Germany would probably have to beat the Confederates by three goals to get into the last eight for the first time in World Cup history.

Ehliz with the decisive goal

Jonas Müller (5th minute), Leo Pföderl (17th), Daniel Fischbuch (19th), Lukas Reichel (26th) and Yasin Ehliz (48th) scored the goals in front of 3124 spectators for the selection of the German Ice Hockey Federal (DEB).

Roman Startschenko (3rd), Yegor Petukhov (16th), Pavel Akolsin (39th) and Nikita Michailis (41st) scored for the Kazakhs, who were still pointless, for whom it was against Italy (1 point) on Monday (3.20 p.m.). "Endgame" for relegation is coming.

So far, Germany had only won five victories in the preliminary round in Kosice/Slovakia in 2019.

In 2011 and 1933, the DEB selection had won the preliminary round in much smaller groups, but then there were further rounds of points before the quarter-finals, which were never finished first.

Beam Meier with World Cup debut

The third goalkeeper Dustin Strahlmeier made a mixed World Cup debut, on the bench sat the Berlin champion goalkeeper Mathias Niederberger.

The regular number one, Philipp Grubauer, was once again relaxing in the stands of the »Helsingin Jäähalli«.

The DEB had already announced Tim Stützle's departure due to a knee injury on Sunday morning.

The early World Cup exit of the NHL youngster, who injured himself during a check against France last Monday and subsequently did not play again, was decided after consultation with the medical department and its NHL club Ottawa Senators.

Debutant Strahlmeier was caught cold: Startschenko's first shot on goal hit the short corner.

Shaken awake by this, the German team came into play better.

Müller put a wrist shot from the blue line into the corner.

As a result, Germany took over the game, but missed some good chances.

Reichel scored in double the majority

That punished Petukhov before Pföderl, who was back on the ice after the break against Italy, hit back in a direct counterattack, which is worth seeing.

Before the break, Fischbuch followed up with his fourth tournament goal.

After the first break, the DEB team only continued to play confidently for a short time.

AHL professional Reichel scored in double the majority.

After that, however, Germany had to put up with the accusation of not having made enough of the numerous chances, which punished Kazakhstan.

The renewed opening goal didn't really give the DEB team any more momentum, but the Kazakhs, who attacked stormily, were no longer able to equalize.
