Edin Terzic will succeed the dismissed coach Marco Rose at runners-up Borussia Dortmund.
The 39-year-old received a contract until 2025. This was announced by the Bundesliga soccer team on Monday.
"We held several intensive talks with Edin Terzic last weekend and are convinced that this personnel decision is the right one for BVB," said future sports director Sebastian Kehl.
"Edin knows our club, the environment, a large part of the team and knows what adjustments we want to make in order to be able to offer our fans successful football."
BVB surprisingly ended its collaboration with Rose (contract until 2024) on Friday after just one year.
Terzic, who is popular with fans, led Dortmund to the Champions League and DFB Cup victory in the 2020/2021 season after Lucien Favre split.
He was then specifically declared technical director so that he would not constantly hover over Rose as an assistant coach.
