For Felix Magath, his short era at Hertha BSC ends with the Bundesliga rescue.
"The project is already over," said the 68-year-old shortly after the 2-0 win on Monday evening in the relegation second leg at Hamburger SV on Sky.
“My job was to stay up in the league.
That was the case with the final whistle.« Magath's contract was signed until the end of the season.
Hertha's sports director Fredi Bobic praised Magath shortly after the game as "savior in the right situation".
It is not yet clear who should lead Hertha as a coach in the Bundesliga.
One of the candidates is former Mainz coach Sandro Schwarz, who is currently employed by Dynamo Moscow and has remained in Russia despite the war in Ukraine.
Magath was brought to Berlin by Bobic in mid-March as the last hope – Hertha had slipped to 17th relegation place.
The former master coach of FC Bayern and VfL Wolfsburg had not been active as a coach in the Bundesliga for almost ten years.
Magath: No worries about the future
The Berliners not only won the first game under Magath against 1899 Hoffenheim (3-0).
A derby defeat against Union Berlin (4-1) was followed by victories against direct competitors in the relegation battle of FC Augsburg (1-0) and VfB Stuttgart.
But then a negative streak set in.
Important points were left behind in Bielefeld (1:1), against Mainz 05 (1:2) and Borussia Dortmund (1:2).
Only in the relegation against HSV did success return just in time.
Magath had repeatedly flirted with staying at Hertha.
Ultimately, however, there was no basis for long-term cooperation.
"I know that I don't need to worry about the future, so I'm taking it easy," said Magath after staying up.
