Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka from Japan failed in the first round of the French Open.

The 24-year-old, who caused a stir last year with her retirement after the first round, lost to the American Amanda Anisimova 5: 7, 4: 6.

Osaka, on the other hand, suffered the same fate as in Melbourne.

She also lost to Anisimova at the Australian Open in January, back then in the third round.

Osaka, currently ranked 38th in the world, has never progressed past the third round in Paris.

Before the start of the tournament, the former world number one reported that she was still moved by the events of the previous year.

“I don't want to lie.

I was worried before I came back," Osaka said.

She did not want to take part in the mandatory press conferences in 2021 and, after public discussions, finally did not compete in her second round match.

Osaka publicly addressed her mental issues on that train and took a break from playing until the Tokyo Olympics.

"I'm grateful to still be playing here at my age"

Meanwhile, Poland's Iga Swiatek continued her impressive streak and advanced to the second round.

Swiatek had no trouble with Ukraine qualifier Lesia Zurenko in a 6-2, 6-0 win in just 54 minutes.

It was her 29th win in a row, the last time the world number one lost a game was in Dubai in February.

Andrea Petkovic is also back in the tournament after beating Oceane Dodin from France 6:4, 6:2.

Next opponent of the world number 65.

is the former number one Wiktoria Asarenka from Belarus or Ana Bogdan from Romania.

"I was very focused from the start and played well," said 34-year-old Petkovic: "And I had a little spy in Angelique Kerber, who played against her in Strasbourg.

This is my favorite Grand Slam and I am grateful to still be playing here at my age.« Kerber is also still challenged on Monday, she meets the Pole Magdalena Frech.
