VfB Hallbergmoos wants to take the first hurdle to stay up in the relegation – and is not deterred by Regensburg's super series.

Hallbergmoos

– In the past few weeks, VfB Hallbergmoos has been a big hit in the Bayernliga Süd.

But now, in the relegation, the team has to deliver four more times in order to be allowed to stay in the Bavarian league.

On Wednesday (7 p.m.) VfB starts the weeks of truth at SV Fortuna Regensburg.

And the optimism in Hallbergmoos is huge to be able to play the relegation finals against TSV Neudrossenfeld or SV Seligenporten after the second leg on Saturday (4 p.m.).

For coach Matthias Strohmaier, this relegation game is somehow surreal: "Regensburg should actually go straight up with its 86 points.

And it's just as crazy that we still have to play relegation after 30 points in the second half of the season Has.

A failure in the relegation?

He's not really concerned with that.

Fortuna Regensburg unbeaten in competitive games since August 17, 2021

Of course, the VfB footballers were very busy with SV Fortuna Regensburg - "and we triggered a small flood of information there".

Strohmaier and other Hallbergers have been busy boosting their networks and watching some videos.

You should have recognized that the Regensburgers are probably the highest hurdle in the relegation group, in which four teams play a place in the Bayernliga.

The Upper Palatinate lost their last competitive game on August 17, 2021 (1:2 against Hauzenberg) - after that the team remained unbeaten in 28 games in the Landesliga Mitte (24 wins).

At the end of the season there were 98 goals scored.

Since Fortuna had to record a defeat and a draw against SpVgg Weiden, Regensburg finished second because of the direct comparison.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

"They have a strong offensive and really little gamblers up front," emphasizes Strohmaier, who is already looking forward to the challenge as a central defender.

Since Andreas Giglberger is also ready for action again, VfB has a full selection in terms of personnel and formation.

Chain of three or four?

Both are possible at VfB.

Strohmaier: "Then you'll still be talking about this season years later."

"Everyone here is looking forward to these two weeks of relegation," says Strohmaier.

“Because now we have everything in our own hands.

We no longer have to look to Wasserburg or anywhere else.” His troops have enormous self-confidence.

Those in charge know about the enormous leaps in performance that hardly anyone thought capable of VfB ("We were the laughing stock of the Bayernliga").

That should also be motivation enough to crown the sensational race to catch up.

"If we manage to stay up, that will be the greatest success in the club's history," says Strohmaier.

"Then you still talk about this season years later."

The coach even smiles away when it comes to pressure and, before entering the small, narrow square in Regensburg, tells the people next to him “that relegation is just great.

We play football for matches like that."

Before games with the old European rules (away goals count double if there is a tie on points or goals), he doesn't hesitate for long: “We're going there to win.

Complete."

Possible line-up:

VfB Hallbergmoos:

Dinkel - Petschner, Strohmaier, Mömkes (Giglberger), Mühlrath - Kostorz, Beetz (Küttner), Sahin - Schmit, Diranko, Werner (Krause).
