26.21 meters - that's how high this wave was that Nuremberg-born Sebastian Steudtner surfed on October 29, 2020 in Nazaré, Portugal.
A year and a half later, a jury has now confirmed: this is the new world record.
The Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa has held this so far, he had also surfed a 24.4 meter high wave in Nazaré in 2017.
Riding the waves at around 80 kilometers per hour, Steudtner emigrated to Hawaii at the age of 16 to learn to surf.
For years he has lived in Nazaré, one of the world's best spots for big wave surfers.
Football coach Jürgen Klopp from Liverpool FC congratulated him personally.
The background: Sebastian Steudtner had previously taught Liverpool FC during training to keep calm in difficult and challenging situations.
Jürgen Klopp, football coach: »Hello Sebastian, ever since we, i.e. Liverpool FC and I, met, we have been riding a high wave. But we'll never reach the height of your wave. 26, 21 meters, that's crazy. Congratulations from the bottom of my heart!«
Steudtner wants to use a faster surfboard to set a new record.
The time could come in autumn when the next season of giant waves begins in Nazaré.
