Soccer star Zlatan Ibrahimović underwent knee surgery three days after winning the Italian championship with AC Milan - and has now been out for more than half a year.
The 40-year-old had an operation on the anterior cruciate ligament and the meniscus of his left knee, the Serie A club said.
The operation, carried out in Lyon, France, had been planned for a long time to correct instability in the joint.
The surgery went very well.
The Swedish striker is expected to be out for seven to eight months, it said.
Recently it was unclear whether Ibrahimović wanted to continue his career at all.
The veteran suffered several injuries in the past season.
On the evening of the championship celebration, he had said that he wanted to continue if he was doing well.
Italian media speculated on Monday that the operation could indicate that he wanted to get fit again to continue his career.
Ibrahimović's contract with Milan expires at the end of June.
