The Israeli swimming team opened today (Wednesday) its participation in the Mara Nostrum round competition in Barcelona, the last preparatory competition before the World Championships.
Two of the team's swimmers, Anastasia Gorbanko and Aviv Barzali, were in the spotlight on the first day of competitions, when Gorbenko won a gold medal in one ointment and broke an Israeli record in another ointment, Barzli picked up the bronze medal.
Gurbanko set the Israeli record in the 100-meter breaststroke, where he set a result of 1: 06.69, an improvement of five hundredths to the previous record achieved at the European Championships last year.
Gorbanko finished fifth in the close final, just nine hundredths of a medal.
She then achieved a prestigious victory in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2: 10.64, a tenth ahead of world champion Katinka Husso of Hungary, and 44 hundredths ahead of the British Ivy Wood.
Exactly the three swimmers who stood on the podium of the European Championships last year.
Aviv Barzali continued to show stability in her strong 200 backstroke.
The Israeli champion won the bronze with 2: 11.68 minutes, behind the Canadian Reagan Rathwell and the Hungarian Sabo Pilototti.
Whoever was close to another medal was Chris Pitchogin who finished fourth in the 50 breaststroke with 27.68 s, 42 hundredths off the podium.
Meron Heruti finished seventh in the 50 freestyle final with 22.37 seconds, and Yaakov Tomarkin was eighth in the 100 backstroke with 56.02 s (qualifiers 55.70 s)
In the 100 backstroke, Michael Leitrovsky and David Grechik finished together in fourth place in the second final (12th place together) with 55.91 s, Leah Polonsky once again came close to the Israeli record of the Zivner Foundation in the 200 butterfly, when she set 2: 12.11 d. Already in the qualifiers and finished in 14th place.
Gal Cohen Gromi finished in tenth place in the 100 butterfly with 52.94 seconds.
