Alcobendas, relegated for falsifying Van den Berg's passport

The Spanish Rugby Federation withdraws the license of two coaches and a club player for the case that left Spain out of the World Cup

The Spanish Rugby Federation has severely sanctioned Alcobendas Rugby, the club that presented a forged passport of the South African Gavin Van den Berg to get him to occupy a place as a national player.

A fact that, months later, meant the exclusion of Spain from its first World Cup in 24 years due to improper alignment after including it in two games of the qualifying phase.

The Sports Disciplinary Committee has decreed the relegation of the Madrid club to Second Division and has separated it from the Copa del Rey final.

In order for a foreign player to be eligible for a selection from another country based on the residence criteria, he must spend three years in the country of destination without leaving it for more than 60 days in a row.

Van den Berg exceeded that deadline during his stay in South Africa in 2019 and Alcobendas presented a photocopy of the player's allegedly lost passport, falsifying those dates so that he could obtain a place as a native player and thus free up a foreigner.

Once the deception was uncovered, after a photo of the player appeared at a wedding outside the period reflected in the document, those involved in the forgery confessed in the hope of alleviating the international sanction against Spain, which was also left out of France 2023 in a decision which has been appealed to World Rugby.

The Federation sanctions the authors of the falsification.

José Ignacio

Tiki

Inchausti, the coach who has led the club to three Copa del Rey titles, loses his license for five years and is fined 3,000 euros.

The same punishment is suffered by Fernando Díez, his second, and the player Jano Cherr, identified as the perpetrator.

What happened is a serious blow to the reputation of Tiki and Díez, who participated in 1999 in the only World Cup that Spain has played to date.

Both were key players in rugby sevens, both in Spain's promotion to the World Series and in qualifying for the 2016 Games. The coach of that 1999 team, Alfonso Feijoo, announced his resignation as president of the Federation after take "responsibility" for the "scam", but "not blame".

Alcobendas' assumption of responsibilities has been incomplete.

The three responsible for the forgery confessed, but did not participate in the World Rugby hearing, in which only Van den Berg testified, from his home.

The directive resigned en bloc, but has not given explanations.

The domestic competition changes after the punishment of a leading Spanish rugby club.

He is expelled from the Copa del Rey final, which was to be played on May 1 at La Cartuja in Seville against El Salvador.

His place will be occupied by Sciences, from Seville, on a date yet to be determined.

The Granota club is also separated from the league semifinal.

It will be Complutense Cisneros, their rival in a quarterfinal that was postponed as a precaution, who will face Santboiana.

The resolution, before which there is an appeal, sanctions the entity with a fine of 30,000 euros.

David Abellán, the manager of the club, is free from sanction, considering the Committee that he was a transmitter and accepting his allegations: he argues that he warned of the edges of the procedure.
